Desperate for ratings they then have next year Christmas special featuring return of another Doctor (this time Jodie Whittaker former co-star David Tennant) and it's this Christmas special that what convinces BBC executives to cancel show as not even Christmas Special (Dark Matter) staring it's once most popular doctor can revive ratings as it's plummets to it's lowest Christmas ratings of 2.9 million. Though speculation sweeps through fan community that show has been permanently been canceled, BBC initial denies reports for few months before announcing six months after Christmas special aired in June 2019 that Doctor Who has officially been put on hiatus.

The franchise is then revised for American audience in 2023 with male English doctor. Key to this third revival is that they act as if second revival never happened as Nu-Who by then is treated by Dr Who fans the same as 80s Dr Who is seen now. A horrible misstep that will always stand in shadow of golden age of who (1963-1981). This new American direction goes on to be complete success as it focuses only on what makes Dr Who works. A cute non serious English Doctor, a couple of hot British companions battling contemporary rubber monsters in fun historical settings throughout space and time ...

The Daleks aren't really the main antagonists. Into the Dalek was more like a single Dalek (one which isn't really an enemy anyway), and TMA/TWF the Daleks are just backdrop, it's more of a Davros story.

This is extremely unlikely considering
a) no Christmas special has yet done lower than 7.69
and b) Mysterio actually did marginally better than Husbands, suggesting there isn't anywhere near a steep enough downward trend in Christmas viewers to bring it down to 4m.

He lightens up a considerably in Doom Coalition compared to Dark Eyes.
I think the issue is more that he hasn't had any interesting companions or storylines since the NEDAs. The episodes of Doom Coalition were mostly decent to good, but I couldn't give a rat's arse about Liv or Helen, and the arc was a disappointment.

Even if 8 lightens up considerably (I wouldn't say considerably personally but I'll concede he's lighter than he was in Dark Eyes - also, f w i w I really like Dark Eyes), the stories don't as much, this grimdark dancing around the Time War has really gotten old for me and feels like universe-shrinking for 8.

Agreed on Liv and Helen and the arc (which doesn't even fucking finish, whatever his next sequential set is will have to be essentially Doom Coalition 5 for a while to tie some of that shit up - really annoys me because Big Finish normally neatly finish their big sets and arcs like that, 'Doom Coalition' is arbitrary because it NEEDS that next set story-wise, the EDAs, Dark Eyes, etc, all had thematic and character endings).

I don't think darkness is as much of a problem as you say. If I think back to my favorite McGann releases from the monthly range, they're all much darker than DC: The Chimes of Midnight, Scherzo, The Natural History of Fear, Terror Firma.
But all of those stories have original ideas and interesting characterization behind the darkness. DC's true problem is that it doesn't have any of that: it's just a glorified 16-episode runaround. And a decent one at that, but not exactly GOAT material (I have more or less the same opinion about Dark Eyes).

Those are my favs too and I loved the darkness in that range, and dark DW stories in general, I just don't think such consistent darkness plays well to McGann's strengths, it works better as a less common thing. McGann is very skilled in underplaying stuff so when he's barraged with 16 dark fighty stories in a row he kind of blusters around not knowing how to use himself. Dark Eyes had a strong vision behind it (even if it was one evolving as it went) and deployed it all in service of a story that had a clear arc for his character, DC didn't, it just feels like "Doctor Who stories with Paul McGann" for the sake of selling "Doctor Who stories with Paul McGann"

I'd say hopefully his Time War sets are good but yeah, I don't have high hopes. BF have surprised me plenty of times before tho

Wait actually that was when the first set dropped, and she was listening to DE3 there. Uhh, I guess just cause it was a popular range and she didn't ask any big BF fans the best place to start with McGann?

I used to know an ABC shop in Aus that stocked BF stuff but they don't seem to anymore. I've always paid online or pirated though. I wouldn't mind some physical copies of my favourites though, or those sweet vinyls if I ever get into vinyl.

It isn't even that dark, honestly. I think the right word is "serious", not "dark". "Dark" stories purposefully explore disturbing ideas and adult themes, and in both DE and DC there are few disturbing ideas and fewer adult themes (pretty much none of either if you take out the Dorney episodes). Doom Coalition is just "serious", in the sense that it has little or no humor in it.
The problem is that they took out the humor without replacing it with anything else, that's why it might feel more "grimdark" than it actually it, when in truth it isn't dark, it's just boring.

/who/ did it once. Now, we're gonna do it again! Yet another entry in an age-old tradition of p̶a̶c̶k̶a̶g̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶a̶n̶f̶i̶c̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶g̶e̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶g̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶m̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶a̶i̶r̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶l̶e̶g̶i̶t̶i̶m̶a̶c̶y̶ / celebrating the magic of Who and the talent of a community.

There are no limits (except the story must be at least 1 word long, and preferably not in excess of 10,000, it's short fiction you fuck).

The rest is self-explanatory. Format for uploading your work is up to you, as long as it can be conveniently copied across (and ideally don't spam long texts in /who/ directly). (Pastebin works well.)

That's really it, I didnt hate it but it is probably the second nuWho episode I was so bored from that I stopped watching. Then I realised the first one I did that for was Cold War so I may just not be a Gatiss fan at all.

I ended up skipping to close to the end of Empress and pretty much missed nothing. Plus it came right after the disappointing 3 parter and I was itching for something good again so after seeing it the momentum of the season just came to a screeching halt

Personally I don't really like it as I always assumed The Doctor was always just a man. It's a pretty good estimate considering we see him live out his entire natural life having never regenerated into a women. I always assumed Time Lords either couldn't regenerate into the opposite gender or it's just VERY rare.

Another reason I'm not a fan of it is because it's clearly been done to push some sort of modern feminist agenda. Like if this whole "culture war" wasn't going on I wouldn't be AS annoyed about the decision because at least it would have been a purely creative one and not one based off quotas, and/or pressure from very particular group.

The role model thing is also a perfectly sound argument in my opinion. Here's the thing, I know for sure when I was a kid this wouldn't fly with me and I wouldn't want to BE the Doctor anymore. As a 10 year old kid why would I want to be a girl? I want a strong male to look up to. It's uncomfortable to admit but kids are a little "sexist" in a way. They prefer their own gender, it's why friendship groups in primary schools never have much of a gender mix.

Overall I think this was a bad decision, not just because I dislike it but I predict this won't fly over very will with a lot of children. Little boys make up a HUGE portion of Doctor Who's viewers and this will lose a lot of them. I'd have stopped watching when I was younger for sure, and I know a lot of my younger cousins aren't going to watch some girl playing the Doctor, they liked and grew up on Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi. I'm guessing Doctor Who's ratings will be worse than ever next season but we'll see. I'll probably still watch it out of sheer curiosity.
