I feel like Dafoe was just messing around one day quoting ryuk and the director got REAL into it and wanted to record a mockup, "just for fun, Willem, honestly," but then got even MORE into and tricked everyone else into making this movie just because he REALLY likes him as Ryuk.
I mean, it really is a perfect fit, but besides him I think the rest of the movie is boring
