It completely subverts earlier Westerns by showing how fucked-up gunmen in the Old West were. Nobody in the movie is really truly good or evil, just varying degrees of assholery.
You know how Gran Torino was an examination to what happens when the badasses that Clint Eastwood played in the 1960's and 1970's becomes an old man? Unforgiven highlights how a murdering bastard like Eastwood's character can actually settle down and try to put his past behind him by trying to live civilized thanks to his wife and kids.
