Probably the absolute basics where I started with maya's particle effect system.

Basic simulations like cloth or fire, smoke & water that can be adapted to a variety of different visual effects when you learn how to render them along with nuke.

Youtube a bunch of tutorials on particle simulations and learn the program, same type of methods and thinking go towards other programs to learn and watch VFX breakdowns, not all of the content shown is done by one person but teams segmented and compartmentalized to each specialty. Learn a few and get really efficient at understanding and applying them just to start and by the time you're good at those you'll probably find your way exploring other related things and snowballs from there.


But it's work, you can't just expect to get anywhere in a few weeks of on and off testing. It's serious study and application for a desired effect. You're not hired just for knowing how to do it but to do the work but fast and ready to scrap and start over, efficiently without complaint but an 'anything else?' mindset.

I never listen to audiobooks but I figured with this one I wouldn't be missing anything. I think it's possibly one of the most insightful books about millenials ever though, because while it's basically just a deeply uncreative masturbatory fantasy for the loser that wrote it, the "protagonist" is someone that grew up with false nostalgia for a time they never experienced.

It's honestly horrifying reading, but hating things is one of the only ways I can feel joy anymore.

Every "human" interaction in the book plays out like the fantasy of somebody whose entire childhood was spent watching people be friends in movies and TV shows.

One of my favourite things that happens regularly throughout is when the protagonist, who is neither athletic, nor good in school, nor conversationally gifted, uses his sparkling wit to humiliate bullies (always richer and tougher but never smarter) in front of entire rooms of people.

I'd say it's more that pop culture has been so accelerated, in large part due to the internet, that cultural decades are becoming more like 5 years long. It's always been like this to an extent: the early 90s was influenced by the 80s, and the early 00s by the 90s, but I think 10 years from now we're going to identify the early 10s and the late 10s as very distinct time periods.

Everything I'm reading in this thread reeks of almost genius; if the author had been slyly critical of the young adult audience that he is catering to for being exactly like or idealising the characters (similar to how American Psycho's descriptions of clothing seem cool and fashionable to a normal reader, but if you're that one /lit/ autist in that thread that one time who can prove that what the characters are wearing are out of date and not actually fashionable, it takes on new meaning) then this might have worked. I actually did read the book. I found it incredibly self indulgent but enjoyed it, for what it's worth. I mean, it's not like the book lied or misled you in any way. Right from the very start its incredibly clear that the guy who wrote it just really liked 80s pop culture and the story is framed as a 16 year old boy telling it so bad writing actually makes sense. My overall opinion was "good for him, finding a way to channel his 80s autism into money". Then I see this thread, and it's clear that he might be just a bit too into the whole 80s thing.
