Excerpt from the book Ready Player One, the film adaptation of which is being directed by smaltz auditor Steven Spielberg.

I think the line "I'd only had it for a few weeks now but my time-travelling, Ghost Busting, Knight Riding, matter-penetrating DeLorean was already my avatar's trademark" actually gave me terminal cancer of the brain
>>
What's terrifying is that if I had read this 7/8 years ago I would probably have enjoyed it
>>
>not linking the pages where he just lists shit he can remember from the 80's and 90's for line after line after line

This should be classified as pornography, it's just so awful and disgusting. Deriving enjoyment from something like this will degenerate your mind.

>My computer science professor suggests this book to the class

i actually couldnt keep reading it. it just becomes so ridiculously bad. it gets worse and worse and worse and worse.

To be fair, this is near the climax of awful writing.

Ernest Cline should crawl into a hole and run a video game channel on youtube from there, and never contribute anything to real media again.
>>
You're right. That one doesn't fuck around with giving you cancer. You lose so many braincells after reading it you just fucking drop dead on the spot right there. I'm a ghost.

He's written worse

The worst part about the book is that everyone he loves in real life, and his whole family, is fucking killed, which isn't a spoiler at all. it's inconsequential because all he can fucking do is think about his video game girlfriend and stupid shit from the 80s.

This author is the most autistic person to actually get something published, and I am ready for all the Ready Player One fidget spinners to come complimentary with 3D movie tickets as a marketing campaign. He's basically that guy who writes the Minecraft fart books.

So... I understand this is basically Sword Art Online for people who aren't weebs?

The writer thinks he's clever by writing a novel set in the future about people who partake in Pop Culture orgies in a VR machine to escape the cruel reality of the world they live in as a way to make a commentary on the infantilization of society when in reality, he's just contributing to the problem. t's trash. Its Pop Culture Reference: The Book. I'm surprised it's not co-written by Seth MacFarlane and the writers of Big Bang Theory.

Main adventure plot will be cut short for the romance, which was the only decent thing on the book.

I wonder how well it will play out on screen but one thing's for sure; it will be a smash hit because atheism, retro nihilistic pop culture references and modern day feminism / diversity is so awesome my bros! yay giant robots, black trans queer homosexuals are stronk ppls too with much feelings!

Probably the absolute basics where I started with maya's particle effect system.

Basic simulations like cloth or fire, smoke & water that can be adapted to a variety of different visual effects when you learn how to render them along with nuke.

Youtube a bunch of tutorials on particle simulations and learn the program, same type of methods and thinking go towards other programs to learn and watch VFX breakdowns, not all of the content shown is done by one person but teams segmented and compartmentalized to each specialty. Learn a few and get really efficient at understanding and applying them just to start and by the time you're good at those you'll probably find your way exploring other related things and snowballs from there.

But it's work, you can't just expect to get anywhere in a few weeks of on and off testing. It's serious study and application for a desired effect. You're not hired just for knowing how to do it but to do the work but fast and ready to scrap and start over, efficiently without complaint but an 'anything else?' mindset.

It's icing without cake. References arent inherently bad but when they are just there so the audience goes "oh hey I remember that" it's empty and hollow. You need a bonafide reason for them to be there.

I never listen to audiobooks but I figured with this one I wouldn't be missing anything. I think it's possibly one of the most insightful books about millenials ever though, because while it's basically just a deeply uncreative masturbatory fantasy for the loser that wrote it, the "protagonist" is someone that grew up with false nostalgia for a time they never experienced.

Every "human" interaction in the book plays out like the fantasy of somebody whose entire childhood was spent watching people be friends in movies and TV shows.

One of my favourite things that happens regularly throughout is when the protagonist, who is neither athletic, nor good in school, nor conversationally gifted, uses his sparkling wit to humiliate bullies (always richer and tougher but never smarter) in front of entire rooms of people.

His best friend is one of the toughest warriors on the entire gay fake reality internet, and they high five one another repeatedly while gloating about how much pseudo-obscure 80's trivia they know.

The romance angle is retch inducing. I was walking my dog earlier while listening to it and felt an actual wave of nausea wash over me.

I definitely hate this book more than I should, but that's only because it's a distillation of why we are philosophically dead as a society

I'd say it's more that pop culture has been so accelerated, in large part due to the internet, that cultural decades are becoming more like 5 years long. It's always been like this to an extent: the early 90s was influenced by the 80s, and the early 00s by the 90s, but I think 10 years from now we're going to identify the early 10s and the late 10s as very distinct time periods.

I HATE this trope. Even if you are witty as fuck, bullies aren't bullies because they or their friends appreciate wit. If you give a bully a really good comeback they just say something like "Whatever fag" and all their douchebag chad friends roar with laughter. The ONLY way to truly humiliate a bully is if you manage to beat the shit out of them.

The description of that character is literally straight outta tumblr fanfiction.
>>
I've read the first bits of the book and then dropped it, isn't the main protag supposed to be a fat fuck? I thought this was to add up on the fact that on a virtual world you can be whatever you want.

Normies will get confused if two actors play the same character.
So the MC is now a hot nerd and his avatar will be exactly him.

Everything I'm reading in this thread reeks of almost genius; if the author had been slyly critical of the young adult audience that he is catering to for being exactly like or idealising the characters (similar to how American Psycho's descriptions of clothing seem cool and fashionable to a normal reader, but if you're that one /lit/ autist in that thread that one time who can prove that what the characters are wearing are out of date and not actually fashionable, it takes on new meaning) then this might have worked. As it stands its a social critique and a power fantasy at the same time, nullifying actual social commentary.

Again, from what I've seen and heard so far.

Its kind of like when they add
>FROM VISIONARY DIRECTOR
or
>3 TIME ACADEMY AWARD WINNING ACTOR
Its all useless self masturbatory fluff that literally no one except for the normiest of normies really cares about.

You know what will be worse? A sequel in the far future in which a copy of Ready Player One is found on a cracked Kindle and it starts a geek cult.

Yeah, I was of that same mindset but it wasn't enough, I had to see the source.

When you see people talking about it positively they'll often mention how creative it is, which aside from "it's fun" is the biggest defense you see from people who ostensibly should know better than to read it in the first place.

The problem is there is not a single original thought or concept in the entire book. I haven't finished it yet but at this point I am certain there won't be. I'm not kidding when I say this:
Everything is described by a comparison to some kind of late 20th century pop-culture reference. If he's in a dungeon it's exactly like the dungeon from X and Y 80's film. Everybody in a boundless virtual reality where anything can exist flies around in a vehicle from Star Wars, Star Trek or some other not-that-obscure nerd culture key text. It is creatively bereft in the extreme. Even the virtual reality internet thing that everyone keeps backslapping him over is just a holodeck with broadband.

The bar is so fucking low now man.

>>85447204
That's why the whole thing is so pathetic, it's clearly just a fuck-you to every jock that fucked a girl he would stare at from across the room, and to every teacher that desperately tried to tell him that Ninja Turtles and Godzilla movies are not a substitute for real literature.
He's so clearly a deeply bitter man, every girl that doesn't show interest in him is a dumb bimbo, the one girl who does is a super cool, super clever gamer girl that loves Monty Python and has rock-bottom self esteem.

The only male character in the book that acts in an even cursory masculine way is revealed to be a chubby black lesbian. It's the most pathetic shit ever.

Just the first paragraph is dreadfully written, he reiterates the same point three different ways and is clearly too braindead to realize he's done so. It reminds me of how women write.

This book is proof that the modern world is a cultural and creative cesspit.

Appallingly bad prose the entire way through. It reads like a rushed 9th grade exam piece. Perfect material for that hack Spielberg to turn into a megamillion blockbuster

Only genuinely diagnosed Autists are allowed to enjoy this book

I actually did read the book. I found it incredibly self indulgent but enjoyed it, for what it's worth. I mean, it's not like the book lied or misled you in any way. Right from the very start its incredibly clear that the guy who wrote it just really liked 80s pop culture and the story is framed as a 16 year old boy telling it so bad writing actually makes sense. My overall opinion was "good for him, finding a way to channel his 80s autism into money". Then I see this thread, and it's clear that he might be just a bit too into the whole 80s thing. I really don't know how to feel anymore.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who derives immense joy from terrible writing. I'm cackling to myself as I read this shit and imagining people paying money for it, enjoying it and being excited for the movie makes it even better.
