If you're using direct downloads then you don't need a VPN.
If you ISP isn't one to dish out warnings and service terminations for torrenting then you don't need one either.
I would have just continued using direct downloads after receiving several warnings from Cox Communications, but my brother had got a subscription to Private Internet Access that can be shared with five? other devices. I had also looked into VPNs in the past and PIA was the cheapest I had some across; the speeds, in my experience, are great too.
