I don't understand Orville.
They had to make a 3 mn trailer to pack everything that would led you to watch the show. And there is nothing. Not a single joke, just a bunch of bad actors on a porrly disgned stage. Who wants to watch that? And its coming from someone who watched all the crappy sci fi shit ever.

>>
>>85395829
Are you sure you aren't talking about Discovery? Because the Orville trailer objectively had jokes in it, a lot of them, you may not find them funny, but that doesn't mean they aren't present.

because its contrarian
its easier to say "its not that shit!" which plebs will bandwagon on rather than actually suggesting/ making something better

its why most critics will never actually suggest solutions, and why theyll keep being successful, it panders and the majority of the people it panders to, are people who have no intent to earnestly engage on the topic

then theyll go and do some jew thing like the tonight show jew who went and started writing speeches for obama rather than actually debate him

It makes Discovery a weak, desperate addition to a dead franchise. They're both just clinging to old imagery that reminds people of things their uncle used to talk about.

They're both going to be garbage and you don't have to watch either.

There was more to it than that, but if you don't like old Trek that is ok, I just don't think this new rehash of an old series that has taken zero steps towards making an effort to produce something quality will be worth my time.

>>he thinks Discovery will be bad because it looks different, not because its being written by children and being made by a creatively bankrupt studio

See above, you and I dislike Discovery for the same reasons, I just didn't think it was worth my time to type it out since most anons just spam "kino" or "pleb" when talking about media these days unfortunately.

>This is what your kino memes have created, /tv/

>>
>>85396082
that's not what that post says.

apart from some of the design that's obviously in homage to trek (like galaxy quest), the show bears no similarity in content going by the trailer.

Yeah a ship being sent to a friendly planet that's being attacked by aliens is completely unheard of in Star Trek. All these nonsense accusations you're throwing at The Orville just make it sound like you have another reason for disliking it, like a personal hatred of Seth because he's popular.

When the Expanse started, I thought "oh well, it'll have to do until the new Trek series comes out". But now I would much rather they commit to a full seven seasons of Expanse than even release Discovery.

Based on the trailer, it's the exact same brand of half drunk anticomedy that he used in everything else he's ever done. And the retards saying "lol it's more Trek than Trek" are just seeing the blatant visual parody while demonstrating an incredible ignorance of what makes Trek actually good.

Star Trek is about exploring human potential in the face of a complex, sometimes hostile universe. It's about examining our nobler impulses and how they can make us better as a society and as individuals, and how people would exist in that society.

I don't know what the fuck Orville is 'about' based on the trailer but it sure as fuck isn't about us advancing together as a species.
>>
>>85395747
>It's Galaxy Quest for tasteless idiots.
So Galaxy Quest
>>
>>85397535
Character-wise and story-wise it was more complex and better presented than ha;f the official Star Trek movies.

Star Trek for tasteless idiots is JJ-Trek.
>>
>>85393756
>Jason Isaacs is the captain
Well then. I feel like they stuffed all the action scenes in the trailer to bait people but maybe I'm being too optimistic.
>>
>>85397423
So is The Orville, except instead of dry wit it's jokes. How can you have missed that? It starts with him being given a Captaincy because the brilliant humans that live on Earth are pumping out wondrous starships faster than crews to man them, to the point that Seth is the best candidate, but, whatever, we need them. So now they're sent to protect this science station full of literal examples of human potential from the hostile denizens of the universe.

I really do think this is just your hatred of Seth talking, I don't even like his other works but this looks funny and exactly what Star Trek TNG was, except funnier and changed enough that they won't get sued.

This anon gets it. I'm a bit apprehensive of STD myself because Alex kurtzman being involved at all rings alarm bells for me, plus I feel like keeping the JJ aesthetic will inevitably change some aspects of the show that will make setting it in the prime universe feel pointless anyway. That being said I love Star trek enough to still give it a shot, especially since we already know that there are multiple established trek names going into the creation of the show.
Orville on the other hand only "looks" like star trek because it has a low enough budget that it can't avoid looking like a show that was made decades ago. The trailer for the show was lame jokes mixed with what seemed like generic bad guy alien action crap. Which the STD trailers have mostly been too btw, but while that show has Nicolas Meyer and was established by Bryan Fuller, this show has Seth MacFarlane. I might watch it because I've been wanting another goofy sci fi show since finishing farscape, but not because it looks like I'll enjoy it in any way like I would an actual Star trek show.

>>
>>85398048
Yeah, what kills me is McFarlane fucking loves Star Trek and science fiction. He was an executive producer for the new Cosmos series with Neil deGrassi Tyson but had them keep his name out of the promotional stuff because he knows what his brand represents.

I'd be perfectly happy if it turned out good, but they know exactly who they're trying to sell to.
>>
>>85393756
>>85395205
I don't care about the ship or the pajamas being replaced by normal space suits. What really annoys me is the lighting. Why are they in the dark? Even JJ knew that you need fucking light to see shit. Sure he pushed it to the other end with the lense flares, but why make everything dark?
And don't tell me that because it's a prequel. I doubt they didn't knew how to make light sources or had a light bulb shortage while they were building space ships.
It annoyed me in the old movies too, they just switched off the light on the enterprise d, because why not.

Why the fuck is CBS so ashamed to make a Star Trek series teared towards actual Star Trek fans? Do they assume that Trek fans will just watch this shit and they are trying to cater to a wider audience of normies?
>>
>>85399024
Part of the problem is no one is quite sure what "Star Trek" even is anymore.

Episodic shows don't really fly in the modern age, and the most profitable and most culturally relevent version of Trek at the moment is also the least like original Trek.
Some experimentation is to be expected.
>>
>>85399024
CBS are incompetent, they thought this is what we wanted because the movies made so much money, and it would be so popular that it would finally get someone subscribed to CBS All Access except mothers who got their children to set it up so they could watch their CSINCIS shows on it.

Then actually experiment. Make a show that is a reboot or set in the Calvin timeline. Don't make a show that looks just like a reboot/something that takes place in that timeline and then say it takes place ten years before TOS. That is just going to piss off and confuse OG fans.

It seems CBS is trying to cast too wide a net and they are going to end up with a mediocre product that nobody is happy with.

All they fucking had to do was make a show that takes place 30 years after TNG. It would be far enough in the future that newcommers to the franchise can be properly introduced to species they arent familar with by having them be experimental officers on an experimental vessel (how cool would the first Cardie Starfleet officer be?), reasonably tweak the ship and uniform designs a bit, and have the actors who want to cameo be the appropriate age.

But CBS are faggots who care more about TOS brand recognition than making an actual fucking good show.

Garak isn't Starfleet, nor would he ever join Starfleet. However, I can see young spoonheads joining Starfleet after the Dominion war if Starfleet helps with the reconstruction of their homeworld.

But we're never getting a series set after DS9 so none of this matters.

If you are going to make Klingons look completely different just ten years before Klingons are introduced, just fucking make a new timeline. What they are doing makes no goddamn sense, and you can tell the people making the show don't actually give a fuck about TOS and are just using it for the brand recognition.

It would be a bigger risk to do what they're doing and put it in a new timeline than to just fuck with the original timeline so they can appeal to people who have only watched the Calvinverse movies. You would alienate your original fanbase a lot less.
>>
>>85401382
I know it's OCD but this really, really bothers me. Want a uniform that doesn't match anything else? Set it in a time frame not sandwiched between uniforms that were so similar. Want to use that time frame so badly? Sure, update the uniforms and use some creative license, but make it at least fucking plausible that they fit that time.
>>
>>85402086
Oh c'mon their not even similar, look at the really old uniforms their turtle necks and the regular ones are vnecks, its completely logical that between the 2 a totally different uniform existed just like how in the US military the Air Force and the Army wear different uniforms, its the same thing here.

No-one was ever going to have some weird Star Trek show off in another continuity and a completely out-there timeframe. Every single series in Trek is connected to the others in some way, all reference each other. What you want sounds interesting, but not Trek. Go watch the Expanse or something like that.

Strictly speaking ANYONE can join starfleet. If you're a non federation species your application needs to be sponsored by a federation civilian or starfleet officer (can't remember which). Ensign Ro and Noggles were officers without their species joining the federation (bajor doesn't enter until the end of DS9, and ferenginar fucking never). Worf too, but since he was adopted he was probably considered a citizen and them promptly put on the cover of every starfleet accademy brochure for a decade before they ultimately get called out for shooping worf into events he never attended.

Meh. Picard's swag captain's jacket in the later seasons was as good as that era of uniforms got.
It's weird how costumes were one of the few things TOS did better production wise. They had good wardrobes for all the other characters.
TNG, DS9, and VOY were just the worst about putting everyone in beige jumpsuits that only kind of fit, or awful pink chiffon. Then give them an awful hairdo that looks like the matted assfur of a fat old labrador styled into one impractical chunk on the top of their head.

Here is my pitch/fanfic for a new Trek. 30 years after TNG. The captain of the Discovery is an admiral's kid or whatever and he has to prove himself that his position wasn't due to just nepitism, and is constantly under pressure to live up to his family name. There is an Andorian security officer, a J'naii science officer, a qt female Cardie doctor that is part of an officer exchange program, and a Romulan first officer who rose through the ranks of Starfleet Academy despite mistrust and prejudice from their peers.

Pic unrelated and meant to act as a distraction from my bad ideas.

Because the old Star Trek style wasn't selling. Hence a gritty more realistic take. It's called brand reinvention.

Orville has no worries because it's a new show parodying an old one so of course it has to heavily draw from the thing it's parodying so the joke doesn't get lost on dumb folk

JJ Trek and Discovery are neither "gritty" nor "realistic." At least no more so than TNG-era shows. Take your buzzwords and shove them.

Blame the show runners for doing everything they could to make voyager garbage, and tried to start enterprise out the same way.
Which, by the way, debuted late in september 2001, without the name "star trek" in the title, so one could appreciate how it might have gone unnoticed for the first season.

CBS stated they will provide no funding to STD, all funding must be provided by Netflix or some other outside interest for it to get a second season and Netflix has not given any funds nor endorsed the show at all due to all the fuck ups.
>>
>>85410526
Netflix is already unhappy after realising they paid for the entire show and therefore they're the only ones taking a financial risk over it, that's probably why they're advertising it so much more cleverly.

>Well to be honest it's not like JJ's movies were a financial catastrophe

First two movies were successful, but third one was borderline bomb at box office. Most likely because first two already alienated the thing that made Trek survive for 50 fucking years, Trekkies. Jar Jar managed to alienate the existing fans.

Jar Jar also wanted to make new Trek TV-show, computer games and shieet. To avoid branding confusion he also wanted to kill licensing of old Trek stuff. CBS makes more money from licensing old Treks...

Since uniforms are have had so much attention on this thread... those were one of few things Jar Jar did absolutely perfectly in his movies. Three other things he got right was casting, shuttle design and using National Ignition Facility as engine room set. Everything else was utter trash.
>>
>>85411309
>Holy shit, they removed the video?
Its not removed. The video is region restricted to block anyone else in the world outside the US from seeing the trailer, to see it you gotta use a US based proxy.

>Jar Jar also wanted to make new Trek TV-show, computer games and shieet. To avoid branding confusion he also wanted to kill licensing of old Trek stuff.
JJ backed off the licensing thing but these 2 things go hand in hand. CBS who own the rights to the TV show were being dicks, they literally turned down JJ's offer to make a TV show because they said they were selling commemorative TNG plates, they actually sent that in a formal letter he posted somewhere. He is just too noob though to think he has the cred to demand that anyone pull licensing of stuff when he has yet to prove he can generate licensing revenue himself.

Spoiler: STD is done under the license from CBS to Paramount, it is NOT done under the CBS license.

That just shows how bad CBS is with dealing with interwebz, they did same fuck up with previous trailer. Someone else within the corporation re-uploaded the US trailer couple days after they had triggered fuckloads of non-US Trekkies. Literally CBS-News was doing damage control for them. One part of company that actually has some touch on how this series of tubes work.

They don't look great either but that's not the point. They just don't fit. If they'd wanted to update the look of that era even quite a bit it would have been fine, just like you don't have to make capeshit costumes identical to the comics. But it need to look like it could have been inspired by the same look. That's what they miss. This is just them saying fuck it, let's make our own new look because fuck you. It means they will likely have that same attitude toward everything else. Which is fine, if it's post TNG or pre Cage. Just not that one narrow window where it makes no sense to change to something unrelated.
