5th Element had Bruce Willis still at his prime which is what made people interested in a 'quirky' sci-fi, also Milla Jojovich looked way hotter than cartoon-face Cara which helped.

Valerian from what I've seen of it is a mess of special effects and poor acting by terribly miscast leads, neither having any box office draw whatsoever.

It's a shame though because the comics are great, and they deserved a better, Besson has lost whatever mojo he once had, much like Ridley Scott.

This movie was amazing, they masterfully managed to cram so much in so short a time, the characters were fun and interesting, the plot was simple and extraordinary at the same time, and the music was excellent. I had more fun watching this at the movies than I did in years. I would definitly rewatch.

Cara Delevigne was laughably bad. So bad that I thought at least three times during the movie "that's seriously the best take you had of that?"
Dane Dehan could act, but the way he looked did not fit the character whatsoever, so it felt awkward.
They had negative amounts of chemistry. Was forced to an uncomfortably level for everyone

The story was a drawn out video game fetch quest

I think just changing the actors could have brought it up to a 7 out of 10. Changing the basic premise of the story could get it up to a 9.

The worst thing about this film is that it's supposed to be Europe's way of showing the U.S. how to make a good film now that they have a U.S. sized budget for a film.

Then, instead of creating a great film that everybody likes, they do the exact same stupid thing that Hollywood does in churning out trash.

The greatest sin is hiring actors based solely on their appearance or name cachet instead of their ability to act and their on-screen chemistry. You could replace Cara Lavingne and Dane DeHaan with Natalie Portman and Christian Haydensen and get the same result.

I don't know if Valerian will flop at the box office (I suspect it will) but this is looking to be nothing but a French version of the Star Wars prequels with a dash of The Force Awakens and Rogue One for forced diversity memes.
