I think the thing I liked the most about it was how grounded in reality the superhero elements were. Later Marvel films have almost none of this outside of really awful pop culture references.

Because the average movie goer wants big explosions and a dozen undeveloped supporting characters who are constantly quipping and being witty

I like the 3rd actually. I was angry neckbeard when it came out because of the Mandarin, but I rewatched this last weekend and enjoyed it. It's very character driven. And Tony's flanderization is minimal

The standalone solo films are always the best. Especially the ones where the hero is learning powers and other people aren't being introduced for sequel or other movie purposes.

Generally speaking the more separated from shit going on in other films and other characters the better.

My personal ranking: Iron Man > Iron Man 3 > Captain America > Captain America Winter Soldier > Thor > The Avengers

The rest is so forgettable I don't know what happened.

They spent a lot of time on Iron Man to make it good, but now they can just coast off their own brand. If they spent an extra three to six months on every movie, they'd all be tremendously better.

Pre-Disney movies are really different and it shows, I recently rewatched Cap 1 and I was really surprised with the violence they got away with, like that Hydra guy getting torn apart by a rotor blade and that old lady getting shot point blank.
