I think it was an incredible misstep for Tarkovsky to decide to adapt something sci-fi when his opinion is quite clear that people should never, under any circumstances explore space.

Tarkovsky is a naturalist. He thinks that man is at peace in nature and that there is nothing worse you can do than leave a nature to which you are perfectly suited in order to lock yourself in a metal tube so you can explore hostile environments.

it probably is tarkovsky's worst film because it's basically just a guy going back and forth between 3 scifi sets for 2 hours but it's also manages to be incredibly beautiful. what a beautiful shot when the station changes orbit and Kris and Hari embrace in zero gravity.
and that twist ending, even if obvious or cheap, the way it's signalled with the rain indoors is beautiful

It's a misstep because instead of creating an original work with that theme, he's shoehorning it into a Stanislaw Lem novel that has completely different outlook and questions. The whole experience becomes muddled by the competing themes which arise from the differences in priority from Tarkovsky and the source material.
