Can anyone actually say how good or bad it was? Everyone is just shitposting about it.

It's good, but it has about zero exposition which is clearly an artistic choice but will surely offput a lot of people used to spoonfeeding. Unless you know about history or read up on the movie beforehand you have no clue what is happening and how it got there, I don't think they even showed the year in the movie.
>>
>>85338934
I thought it was the most boring movie I'd ever seen.

It has no real plot. You don't really get to know the characters. You just follow them while they do... things for the sake of making the movie continue. It's weird. Nolan has stuff happening to the characters to fill in time but it seems so artificial... like there's no ticking time bomb scenario because everything that happens is within the context of the evacuation so you know nothing wil happen other than what did, historically.

You never see Germans or even any references to Nazis - they aren't even referred to as Germans or Nazis except once. Every other time, they are called "the enemy".

The entire movie has tense music and a ticking clock going to make you feel tension but there is honestly nothing there. It's weird. It's like you're completely aware you're watching something boring and pointless but you can hear the music trying to tell you to be anxious and tense, separately from the picture.

You could barely understand a word anyone was saying, when they did speak - and that wasn't often because there were only a few lines of dialogue in the movie.

For some reason, there were 3 chapters which led up to something and then were ignored for the rest of the movie.

Also for some reason, bits of the story were told out of chronological order and all it did was confuse everything pointlessly.

Oh but it was shot in 70 mm ^_^

But yeah I really hated this movie. It's not entertaining. It's like a documentary but without actually teaching you anything. There's no plot and no content and no connecting with the characters or caring about them.

I seriously wanted to leave several times during the movie and was pretty mad when I left.
>>
>>85338934
It's good, watch it in 70mm or IMAX and it's a fantastic experience
>>
>>85339266
What are your thoughts on Master and Commander?
>>
>>85339266
Holy shit never give your opinion on /tv/ again.
You are the first person I've seen mention the movie being three chapters and still being confused by the editing and pacing.
>>
>>85339266
You just listed reasons why it was a good movie.
>It has no real plot.
Yes it does, just not a traditional one. It's a story of men made for men, it's above trying to pull your heartstrings with a lovable lead character (and his romantic interest). It doesn't stoop to bullshit, because people who understand the importance of the story told don't need it and Nolan has enough artistic integrity left to keep it that way.

This is a huge hit in the UK. 22 screenings per day at one cinema in my city.

It's a film by a British director about a particularly British story and you're judging the opening on US numbers.
>>
>>85339343
Haven't seen it.

>>85339386
Stay mad, you fat neckbeard.

>>85339394

I've never seen it before but that combination just seems off. Is it very different from his other movies?
>>
>>85338934
>>85338934
it really is good, best war movie since 1998 or so.
>>
>>85339557
Yes, it's a lot different. The film benefits greatly for it. You should go see it, it's definitely one of his best films.
>>
this film is the ultimate IMAX bait

sitting there with the stukas was intense, I get the feeling I would fall asleep watching it on a laptop or something though
>>
>>85339557
It's probably most similiar to Following but that's only because it's so unlike other Nolan films.
The cinematography isn't different, it's his style and gorgeous shots, but the plot is very minimalistic and like I said there's zero exposition and you mostly get to know the characters through their actions, very few even have names.
>>
>>85338879

>interstellar opens with a lower number

I wouldn't worry about Dunkirk. Homeflopping and apes on the other hand....

>>85339685
I saw it in one of those "SCAPE" theatres with "360" Dolby Atmos and the audio was fucking insane. It was a huge screen and a fancy projector but I kept thinking how good it much look in IMAX. Especially the dogfight scenes, the camera turning sideways was such imax bait.

I heard its much tauter in terms of narrative and better than recent shit like Inception, TDKR, and Interstellar. I've always wanted a feature-length Nolan horror film with the intensity of some of TDK's scenes. If it does flop though, Warner Bros. will probably get a Batman sequel with the Riddler or something...
>>
>>85339723
I would go see it again just for the dogfights alone

problem is the IMAX here is so jewishly priced, like 18euro for a fucking ticket.

Meanwhile a regular ticket is 5euro...

IMAX was great but it's not worth three times the price great, I might go see a normal screening so I can compare
>>
Fury and Hacksaw Ridge were better, bros.

You're a fucking child. Besides, not seeing the enemy gives the movie added tension because if you can't see the enemy it's hard to fight back and makes the danger feel more colossal and unable to fight against.

There was no sense of fucking danger at all because I didn't get to know the characters, their motivations, and knew that everything that was going to happen was going to take place within the framework of the fucking Dunkirk Evacuation. I know that Nolan only found artificial danger for the kids to get into while everyone was evacuated - interspliced with fucking scenes of Kenneth Branagh staring wide eyed into the fucking distance every 5 minutes.

This movie was garbage. I don't care how nice it looked. It was fucking trash.

the problem with war films is they only appeal to a small market (in this case UK/Aus/NZ and a lesser extent the US).

How did Tom Hardy down that German plane and turn without having any fucking fuel left?

Why didn't he parachute out on the beach with his comrades? Why did he land in enemy territory (and risk crashing by the way) and just allow himself to be captured?

This movie was so terrible. So, so terrible.

And it even had the same fucking shot as CIA in TDKR... Hardy standing in front of a plane with fire and the slow zoom. Just what the fuck.

We already know the context though. Everybody knows the context. You only don't know the context if you're an idiot. Do we really need 30 minutes just on building up to the war? No, that's time that could have been used. It's like having to constantly show Bruce's parents getting killed. "Oh, Bruce is Batman because of this moment. We need to show it in every single film he's in." Yeah, no.

Nolan has watched his European war kino. People in the war weren't chatty. They weren't shooting shit and qute oneliners like in your American war movies.
Imagine yourself driven off the European continent after fighting a losing war and sleeping in artillery fire for months. Feel chatty?
>>
>>85338934
It's pretty great. It will probably go down as one of the best (Top 10) WW2 movies ever made.

The multi-plot narrative over 3 different timeframes takes getting used to, but Nolan pulls it off.

Sound effects are amazing, but the ambient noise makes a lot of dialogue hard to hear (I saw it an old theater converted to IMAX, so that could just be my experience)

Great cinematography (I'd say Nolan's best so far) and great practical effects

The actings good, but doesn't really ask much out of any of the cast members. Could have been castes with a bunch of no-names and it wouldn't have made a difference. Tom Hardy does crash a lot of planes with no survivors so that's pretty fun.

Yes there's the leaflet that's on screen for about 2 seconds. I didn't say the movie needed exposition. I didn't criticize the movie for lacking exposition. Why are you so defensive?

I stated as a fact that there is not a lot of exposition. You don't know the year. You don't know it's World War 2. You don't know how the French folded in front of the German army. You have absolutely NO IDEA who the enemy is or why you're supposed to be scared of them.

I knew all of these facts beforehand, so I enjoyed the movie. That does not change the FACT that they are not clearly stated in the movie. I'm not saying they should be, I think it was much better this way. But don't overestimate the average viewer and the FACT that this will be an issue to many.
>>
>>85341326

It didn't need exposition, we all know what happened at Dunkirk. We don't need some bullshit manufactured drama just to satisfy modern audience ADD.

I loved that this was a war film that just showed different facets of war without turning it into hyperbolic action.

So guys
which was the more realistic beach scene?

Nolans: where the soldiers do fuck all day and is just standing in line waiting for the ships for a fucking week? Hardly no military equipment. Hardly no reactions from the crowd beside dodging planebombs

Or
This 5min tracking shot on dunkirk from the moive attonement.
Where we see the chaos that spawns with having +300k men waiting for either death, salvation, combat or surrender.
a scene that shows the grit that is war. That captivates all these diffrent emotions and reactions.

What are you lolling about? Nazis (4? soldiers) are only shown in the final shot except for a few planes. Why are 400.000 people fleeing from what, 8 planes seen in the movie? Because of the impending doom of the advancing Nazi army which IS NOT SHOWN.

What you expect the average person to know about world history is completely unrelated, I'm simply stating what happens in the movie. And not because I think most viewers won't know about Nazis, but simply because it's the most blatant example of how historical knowledge plays into the enjoyment you get from this film.
>>
>>85341680
It's still too early in the year for Oscar bait, you gotta wait a few more months.
>>
>>85341747
The movie works perfectly without prior knowledge.

Exposition was not needed regardless of whether or not the audience knows about Dunkirk.
>>
>>85341680
Oscar bait movies have clear main characters for those trophies. This movie is way too non-traditional to be oscar bait. It can only win awards like sound editing.

I can't say yes or no, because I haven't seen this film without prior knowledge.
But I have seen this movie and noticed myself relying a lot on prior knowledge which I enjoyed greatly but I also realize not everyone has my prior knowledge.

I guess neither of us can say whether it would've worked. I realize all the bare minimum to understand the story were there but like I said in the post you originally replied to it will offput some people. I didn't say it's a fault of the movie or that you can't understand a single thing without reading up beforehand but it will offput some people.
>>

The tracking scene was neat but ruined by the fact Atonement was half mediocre CGI

Dunkirk was realistic but could have used a bit more in building the sets (odd bits of modern architecture showing etc). Not that it matters when the meat and gravy was in the air and on the sea, in that regard everything was pretty much perfect.

>How did Tom Hardy down that German plane and turn without having any fucking fuel left?
You can glide for quite a while when out of fuel. Max glide endurance/Max glide range. Depends on flight profile.

>Why didn't he parachute out on the beach with his comrades? Why did he land in enemy territory (and risk crashing by the way) and just allow himself to be captured?
Bailing out is really fucking dangerous. Even today, ejecting is a dangerous and painful experiences. Especially if surface winds are greater than 25mph. Landing the plane, even in enemy territory, was probably the safer option.

Allied pilots weren't horribly mistreated, so its a safe bet he could expect to make it to the end of the war.

You would climb out of the cockpit, hugging where the wing meets the fuselage. Your not climbing out onto the wingtip, just outside of the cockpit. You want to get right where the wing meets the fuselage, and dive down, below the tail of the aircraft.

No doubt some pilots rolled before bailing, and I'm sure a few such instances made it into books. But they were the exception not the rule.

the problem wasn't using a beached ship for target practice. In fact the first few shots were fine becuase it was just poking holes in the ship.

Later when the germans were lighting it up, every hole they punched in the ship caused a torrent of water to gush through. Which means they were shooting through the water.

Since the method for leaving the a fighter plane of the era is.

1. Remove Canopy

>Later when the germans were lighting it up, every hole they punched in the ship caused a torrent of water to gush through. Which means they were shooting through the water.

If you are shooting at the waterline it will flood as there is wave action (really notable close to shore) and as the ship takes on water and goes lower, the holes that used to be at or above waterline will be producing water constantly.

And this is assuming that the boat doesn't have a list, which we cannot tell due to how it is shot.

>I knew all of these facts beforehand, so I enjoyed the movie.
you are right that the movie lacked exposition. However, I think the plot of the film is pretty simple and the struggle universal and it would be enjoyable even for somebody who knows nothing about WW2.
>>
>>85345594
Yep, though a 40% drop in the US market is viewed as a huge win. If it holds to a <45% drop, they might be raking in money for weeks, which would be a good thing as it a good movie .

It was a fun experience, but it's more like a ride than a movie. I got bored toward the end, and in my opinion the soundtrack is terrible.

I went with someone who knows nothing about WW2 outside of D-day, pearl harbor, and the Nazi's are bad. She thought it was great and actually wanted to learn more about the little boats since she thought it was made up for the movie and she was shocked when she found out it really happened like that.

but even she figured out it was WW2.
>>
>>85345353
Can you not read? Nowhere did I say "walk on the wing". You climb out of the cockpit onto the wing where it connects to the fuselage. You then dive down.

There is no walking on the wing. Hitting the stabilizer is still a risk, but mitigated by diving down.

And when I say "climb" here >>85345882 that doesnt mean you will be standing up and just strolling. You establish straight and level flight as best you can, and hug the airframe while sliding your body out of the cockpit, onto the wing, and then pushing yourself off at a downward angle, below the tail of the aircraft.

Don't worry, more marvel super hero movies are coming. I'm sure you'll like those.
>>
Just saw it. It was ok. Better than most big budget movies nowadays, at least he's trying.

What I didn't get though was the casting of Tom Hardy. An expensive A-lister. You literally don't see his face 99,9% of the movie. I know he played Bane, but in that movie he got to experiment with his body, the language and his eyes. In this movie you couldn't even see half his eyes. They could have used the fucking janitor to play his role and it would more or less have been the same result.
>>
>>85348854
I think Tom Hardy probably did this because he's friends with Nolan and is British.

He doesn't seem like an A-Lister in the traditional sense.
>>
>>85348854
Why do you think Tom Hardy keeps popping up in Nolan movies? They like working together.
>>
>>85348905
>>85348925

Just doesn't seem very cost efficient to me. But maybe he didn't get paid as much in this movie and it's like you said: they like working together.

Spoiler alert: I like the part the old guy and the two younglings were picking up the guy who was sitting on top of his capsized boat. They gave the guy lots of screentime and hid his face for as long as possible. You could feel how everybody was thinking (or maybe it was just me) yup, this is gonna be Harry Styles. And then he gave Harry Styles an understated introduction. At least Nolan's not Hollywood in That way. A subtle pisstake probably.

Even with 1/5th the population, the popularity of big British films in the UK can make the US market rather less important than for most other blockbusters. Both those bond films made only 1/5th of their total gross from the US and the UK was the second biggest moneymaker for both films

I don't know. All good directors have a purpose for everything they do right? Just look at the amount of different shots and screentime he gets before his face is revealed. Only times they do that is with bad guys or really important characters. Maybe he wanted the audience on a subconcious level to think allready that this was the bad guy. Could be anything really. But it was intentional.
