Horror entirely revolves around two things, atmosphere and unconventional camerawork. At the time Blair Witch came out, shakey personal camera hadn't really been done in massive scale with horror yet, so everyone was surprised and well spooked in the theater.

This is also why 99.99% of horror from any year sucks massive dick, they try to ape some other movie, not realizing it will instantly destroy the scariness because people will immediately go "been there, done that" mentally and not get the spooks.

What are the best found footage movies?

I watched Paranormal Activity 5 on a whim, and it was shit. I really enjoyed that first one though. VHS was OK.
