Yeah it's not very shocking or good. But context of the year it came out is important.

It came out in 1975, before the internet and goatse, 2girls1cup, etc. It's shock value visually may be nothing new to some modern viewers, but the core story of fascists using their power to sate their own depravity upon youths still carries a lot of weight.

La grand bouffe is a much better treatment of some of the themes explored in salo, and far less schlocky with it. Give it a go if the synopsis sounds interesting.

Salo is garbage. I'm generally positive on Pasolini (although he's far from a favourite), but for me Salo hasn't the slightest bit of value. Much like the original works (I'll admit that I haven't read it, just excerpts. I see no reason to), it's a sloppy mess with a very hamfisted message that nobody needs to hear. Much less so in this day and age.

This is a horrible idea, and there's simply no need for a remake. Found footage films were perfected a long time ago, now it's just an easy, amateur way to shoot your film. Cannibal Holocaust is actually an excellent example of it done well, probably my favourite.
