Is there a Jurassic Park reference though? That's what I care about.
>>
>>85299932
No, of course not, but it relies heavily on them to move the plot forward.

But basically the book is about this megaultra billionaire and creator of the de facto virtual reality world(s) called the Oasis, James Halliday, who upon his deathbed sets up this game within his Oasis game to find easter eggs and obtain three keys which will grant the winner the chance to win every single one of his monetary assets.

To find those keys and easter eggs you have to have a beyond autismal knowledge of pop culture references as well as weebshit.
>>
>>85298284
Japan said no. It was the right move.
>>
The book is the biggest pile of shit.

Oh and the love interest is exactly her by with a scar and her friend is a fat black girl who uses a white guy avatar.

And the kid obviously wins the prize from the egg hunt and gets given control over oasis after a fan-wank mech/robot battle where every aspie controls a mech from pop culture.

There. I saved you the hassle of reading that piece of shit.

It's like a race to list as many middle-brow, entry-level pieces of trash as possible. Does the author have no self-awareness?

What's even worse is that even with all the autistic listing, there is no in-depth references made. It sounds like the author has just read a Wikipedia page of 'popular 80s videogames' and written down a few names.

Christ this shit is terrible and if you enjoy it you should be embarrassed.
>>
>>85300590
To be fair, it is literally just what one random Gen X-er liked growing up. The weird part is the way the book treats it like he has godly taste, and truly never again will such a glorious era of media come about
>>
But the memes. The memes! Where are the shitty, normie, low hanging fruit memes God damn it
>>
>>85300590
Brave Raideen is hardly entry level. It didn't even have subs in the 80s.

The problem is that he lists off the references without really doing anything that makes it believable that he or the characters are fans of these things. Same issue with The Big Bang Theory.
>>
>>85300848
Fair enough, perhaps there are some obscure references, but as you say, any idiot with an internet connection could display a similar level of 'nerd knowledge' as the book does.

You only need to read the reddit thread to know how shit this is

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/6owob5/ready_player_one_official_trailer/
>>
>>85300848
I didn't know what that thing was but looking at the Wikipedia entry for it.
>Brave Raideen is considered the first super robot anime to reach a large U.S. audience directly. It was first broadcast in Honolulu, Hawaii on KIKU TV-13, which ran the series with English subtitles created and produced in-house. The series first hit the mainland in June 1976, Sunday nights at 6:00 P.M.

This is when I start to understand why people lose hope in the average audience. Because the Iron Giant is the worst part in this.
It's pure cynical movie-making, it's just producers in a board room that know that Iron Giant means something to people and they put it in because it can bring more people in.
It's prostitution of a meaningful icon that was originally untainted and pure.

Fuck this movie, fuck Hollywood, fuck my life.

In the end the kid becomes a billionaire thanks to his escapism, and mets people and friends thanks to it.

>expecting actual non-entry level shit in a book like RPO.
40k isn't exactly the most obscure IP in existence, but anything like it or similar stuff like say 2000 AD, aren't going to be appearing in a book like this. Because the purpose of it isn't to actually make a book about a treasure hunt featuring stuff liked by an actual super-nerd, it's purpose is to cram as many pop culture references that normalfags know as you can into it and then say "see, all this stuff is nerdy." The purpose is to make normalfags feel "lol so nerdy XDXD" because that's what's popular right now, and including anything slightly obscure would completely ruin that. It's the same reason it's practically a list of popular IPs, rather than something that actually makes you think the protagonist actually has an understanding of these IPs. Making it so that knowing the order in which kenshiro defeated the kingsmen in FotNS, or that Ao is the overlord of forgotten realms in DnD would instantly confuse normalfags, and that would cause them to drop the boom right then and there, because they no longer feel nerdy.

So instead we get a list of entry level shit glued together by an overdone plot and terrible prose

It is the most shallow, uninspired and blandest thing a person could create, and is nothing more than a list of various 80's things. It's shit and thus deserves to be shit on

is it though? cos that sounds awfully like an opinion.

I bet you think the book is "reddit" too

>>85308510
there we go with another opinion, I don't even think those cherrypicked parts are bad, out of context like that they seem retarded and reference heavy to someone who hasn't even read the book.

jeez it's almost as if people have different taste

The references are completely irrelevant in Scott Pilgrim, it's just a story mixing fantasy with reality with a bunch of cool characters.

being an artist right now must be depressing as fuck
what's the point of honing your skills, trying to reach above your abilities, engaging your audience instead of insulting him--when at the end of the day, that chucklefuck who writes worse than most fanfiction writers gets the big bucks by just autistically namedropping every "lolsonerdy" franchise he knows?
Is this how the future is going to look like for movies?

Read nigger read:

That entire section is literally just the protagonist just listing off all the """"""nerdy"""""" things he had to learn about in order to win. Not actually showing what he did to learn about them, not referencing anything in particular about them that displays actual in depth knowledge about them just "I read [list of famous authors] and listened to [famous musicians]"
>>
>>85308805
I've read the whole comic before going to see the movie.
I thought both were above average.
>>85308818
No, RPO is science fiction with 0 fantastical elements with a bunch of characters barely fleshed out.
The plot and everything on it feels fantastical because the plot is simply unbelievable, full of plotholes, and it has a criminal lack of a hermeneutical world.
It's a science fiction tale set in a dystopian future that is hard to believe, with a plot that is basic and has a several lack of themes, and characters that are incredibly flat, they undergo extremely shallow and boring "arcs".

Scott Pilgrim is pretend Reddit, it's a film that works on most levels, but that because it associated itself with nerd culture it's consistently branded as being "Reddit" around here, while RPO is something whose whole purpose is being nerdy. There's nothing below the most shallow foundations for a story behind the pop culture references in RPO, while in Scott Pilgrim the references are just that, references, they're irrelevant plot-wise.

They could, maybe, just maybe, actually describe him watching/reading/playing/listening to the stuff? You know, actually depict him fucking learning about that crap, then using some transitionary scenes to indicate the passage of time?
I know showing rather than telling is beyond the meager capabilities of the author, but that doesn't mean it isn't crap
>>
>>85309415
>showing rather than telling
It's literally a book. A book written in first person.
You can't do anything other than telling.
How could've done that better? He simply shouldn't have done it to begin with. Just say he spent months learning 80s stuff, but listing all of them like it was a goddamn catalogue is asinine, it brings absolutely nothing but cheap references.
>>
>>85306062
you could've at least named some good Spielberg films
