The planes and gunfire and environmental sounds were all fucking fantastic (and terrifying) but the dialogue was almost unintelligible. I don't know if that was the point but it was so soft compared to everything else, and to make it worse they were British so it was like mumbling.

Most of the small ships were commendeered by the navy and used to ferry people to larger naval vessels and these little ships were crewed by navy crews.

A few fisherman bravely helped out, but it wasn't more than a dozen.

What a small worldview you have. A number of factors contributed to the Allied victory in WWII. To say that it was the "USA" that "saved" anyone full stop is extremely reductionist.

The USA definitely made a large contribution to winning the war, but smaller efforts throughout Europe (e.g. the guerrilla war in Yugoslavia) and frankly Hitler's ineptitude on multiple occasions all played one part or another in the ultimate outcome.

I think Dunkirk actually does a phenomenal job at showing just how scattershot the second world war was, better than nearly every WWII movie produced from the American perspective
