IMHO i wasn't bothered by the inner-monologue narration in lynch's film, but I can see how it would bother others, the same way subtitles bother some.
I'd split the book into a part 1 and 2 for the movies just so you could really flesh out the characters and setting.

It was mediocre. Poorly cast actors, hilariously bad costume design, and the nonexistent budget all hurt it. It was still watchable though and the guy who played the Baron was really good.
