Not me man. Besson has carved out a place in my heart. As a director/writer/producer he's got a pretty solid output, and some of his movies are among my favorites. Not even the obvious stuff like fifth element and leon. Go watch the original Taxi. Its fun as fuck is the frog speak doesn't turn you off.
And he does well internationally, the chinese eat his shit up because he does a good job of making a lot of the story elements and especially humor visual.

Based on the mixed reviews I wasn't expecting much, maybe a Jupiter Rising or something, but what I got was more than I could have hoped for. A landmark visual film, the effects and animation are easily the best since Avatar, the humor is spot-on, the characters are simple but effective, and the plot isn't nearly as bad as critics have said. The costume and production design are better than Avatar, I can't really think of anything in recent memory that is even close.

If I had to pick some negatives they would be a somewhat awkward love story and some fairly corny lines, as well as Luc's characteristic strange choices in music.

Where did the magical pooping alien come from if everything on their planet that wasn't on the ship was destroyed?
When Valerian suddenly goes off about being a soldier and playing by the rules I wondered if he was reading from a different draft of the script than everyone else.

Something dumb happens in almost every scene.

Also, this isn't really a problem with the writing I guess, but it's weird how our heroes have absolutely zero interest in saving any of the guys they were working with at the beginning.
Kinda seems like their ship could have come in handy there.

and they do that awful shot where the camera circles around people while they themselves walk in circles and "reveal" the plot of the movie with stupid dialog where they keep completing each others' sentences and flashing back to scenes that had absolutely no ambiguity but they had to clear it up to make sure their popcorn movie audience understood exactly what was going on

Most heroic moment went to the Asian guy whose name I don't even remember.
Dives into harms way to save a ton of lives with barely anything protecting him from enemy fire.
Then you've got Valerian mowing down robots with incredible ease. He's in no danger and he clearly knows it, except for the bombs someone else is dealing with.

All the 'action' sequences were dull cgi, but when the movie slowed down and had the characters interacting with the world I really enjoyed it, outside of that I was just waiting for it to end.

Literally the worst parts of the movie were what was shown in the trailers. Every scene with Cara interacting with aliens was great.

Sadly this movie is going to get shit all over despite some truly great sci fi camp scenes. >>85276690 covered pretty much what will be the general consensus but honestly I pretty liked the movie because I didn't give a shit about any of that before I walked in.

Just got back from it.

It was a pretty bad movie. Both leads were horribly miscast. The love story is forced and awkward. The story is incredibly boring.

I also think this movie will flop. The theater in my hometown is always packed for this type of flick, it's impossible to get seats a few hours before a showing there, so my buddy and I usually go to the town next to us. We took a chance and checked on this one and the seats were wide open. I think they made a mistake going against Dunkirk, and the lukewarm reviews aren't going to help.
