Why does a female character become 'strong' if she does manly things? That seems counterproductive, especially when real femininity is pure and wonderful.

I'm not familiar with the source material but the Disney version shows her try and fail time and time again before getting stuff right and she is up there with the men because none of them are trained and fail too. She excels over the others only because she is the protagonist and is expected by the audience to eventually overcome and dominate. She wasn't automatically just amazing at everything right off the bat or inexplicably amazing at something. She was a realistic character portrayed as having flaws and faults but were able to overcome because that's her progression as a character.
