You can blame Dr.Who for that, granted I don't watch the show and I don't care that the new doctor is a woman. But the show introduced the sci fi genre to a large female audience. What we're seeing now is the result of this because Sci-fi has allowed women to explore leadership roles where others genre couldn't (although crime dramas come to mind, those are also very female centric now as well.)

Doctor Who isn't even sci-fi. It doesn't have any of the themes or ideas that permeate almost all of sci-fi (e.g. man's relationship with technology); it's literally just Harry Potter with wacky inventions.
