Doctor Who is dead.
>>
He has no desire to enter your place of residence.

The finale of Broadchurch got over 11 million viewers, The Doctor Falls got just 5 million (it sounds bad when you put it that way, but Doctor Who has never not been in the top 30 most watched shows each week since 2005) So while ratings aren't great they could be worse.

After the finale of the first series, it made the front page of quite a few papers, reminded me of all the hype of Bad Wolf at the time.

The reveal got over 16 million views. Social media postings have been 80% positive, a Yougov poll said only 14% of people were against it, sure, not all of them will be regular viewers but the complaints are very much the minority, most people will tune in for the first episode anyway, they just need to make a good first impression, either way the show's going to be fine.
>>
>>85218667
>Doctor Who has never not been in the top 30 most watched shows each week since 2005
The Day of the Doctor was literally the most watched drama programme of 2013, the most watched programme not only of the week, but the month. And that's only in terms of TV viewings, in cinemas it placed third in the box office for that week, only behind the Hunger Games and Gravity.
>>
>>85218895

>>
Here's a bit of a fallacy I found in Death in Heaven;

Missy is dangerous, and UNIT knew she had devices on her, yet only Osgood took one of them off her - she's seen with a bracelet that can control the Cybermen.

So if they were a credible organisation wouldn't it have made sense to strip her whilst she was knocked out to ensure she couldn't escape? She's a valuable prisoner, you don't want to leave her dangerous.

We could've got a rear nude scene from Michelle Gomez - they can do it with Matt Smith, so why not her? Shame, really.

That being said, I hope we get a similar scene with the 13th Doctor ;)
>>
>>85218840
I don't care that the Doctor's female now - in fact, I'm looking forward to it. It will be different and fresh. My main concerns are for the general public. The show has its worst viewing figures ever at the moment. People don't watch it.

They should've done the female thing after they got the casuals back into it. 13 should've been a male, Tennant type, then make 14 a female.

S11 ep1 will get loads of viewers, then it will stagnate

If that was true, you'd see AIs vary wildly inside a series. Instead, it's mostly consistent for each series.
It means that the criteria it is based on allow to make a precise measurement.
Whether or not those are the criteria you want to measure is another matter.

No it wasn't.
I Am The Doctor has similar instrumentation and that's from Series 5, and while The Mad Man With a Box shares its name with The Majestic Tale, the two tunes are nothing alike. The Majestic Tale was made for Series 6. The only bit that carries over from Series 5 is a teensy bit of The Sun's Gone Wibbly in the latter half.

Murray wrote more memorable music before 12's era but it felt intrusive/ill-fitting and often drowned out the dialogue.
His music now isn't so memorable but I feel like it fits the atmosphere of certain scenes better. Hell, the Doctor's speech in TDF when he's begging the Master and Missy to help him doesn't have any music at all, who'd have ever thought that would be a thing?

Always thought it'd be neat if you could customise your own Doctor, and it's basically a quest game. Maybe an open-worldish 'Find all the parts of the key to time' type of thing with missions.

So is it canon that the doctor actually "dies" in regeneration, and a "new man" takes on his body?
I've heard people saying that it's a one time thing that RTD wrote that's pretty much ignored everywhere else
TBQH i like it, it adds more emotional weight to each regeneration and it's what made ten's regeneration feel like an actual character death
>>
>>85221136
So was Bill's mother the daughter of Clara and Danny? She looks exactly like her in an afro.
>>
>>85221440
>it's what made ten's regeneration feel like an actual character death
regeneration isn't supposed to feel like character death, though. I interpret it as 10 just being a mopey melodramatic asshole that doesn't want to accept that he can't continue to exist in his current body.

>>
>>85221440
regeneration is a metaphor for the show itself. just as the show constantly changes hands, with new producers, writers, directors, actors, and showrunners taking over every few years, the character of the doctor regenerates, and while the basic qualities of that character remain the same, elements of him change. just like how the show stays the same, and yet changes every so often.
treating those changes like "death" is insulting to everyone that works on the show, since the show is about taking your turn, making the best of it, and passing it on. it's about constantly accepting and embracing change, and to try and get some cheap emotional grab by turning a tradition into 'killing' a character is shit writing and betrays the show's legacy.

Except 11 said he was 907 in the 11th hour which is consistent enough with Tennant's age in voyage of the damned
>>
>>85221440
There is a persistence of consciousness from one moment to the next. It isn't comparable to the mortal concept of "death", and to suggest it is defeats the whole concept. Change isn't death, it only feels like death if you are extremely invested in things staying as they are.

Not him, but I'm still interested in this whole "4 lived the shortest" thing.
I mean, he had the most seasons I believe. But that doesn't really say anything because some Doctors age hundreds of years in just one episode, like 11's final episode.
So did 4 ever get trapped somewhere for decades? Ever mention any off-screen adventures? Or are we supposed to believe that all the serials he's in is ALL he's done in his life?

I mean, life length of each Doctor is debatable but I doubt 4 had the shortest life out of all of them? Surely 9 or 10?

It's probably fair to say 4 aged some years between Shada/Nimon and Leisure Hive. (He's with Romana, another Time Lord, so he could've aged hundreds of years and they'd look no different.) Tom tends to always have a companion, but there's nothing to say he couldn't have had some off-screen adventures between stories.

I don't really give a shit about what people think before it actually airs. They said the show could never follow up the beloved Tennant with some weird looking and super young unknown, MUH TENNANT fever was all the rage, then it aired and people dealt with it because it was actually fine and the show survived another 7 years.
>>
>>85222620
http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Doctor's_age

Doctors' lifespans according to TV and EU:
Hartnell: about 450 years
Troughton: about 50 years
Pertwee: about 250 years
T. Baker: exactly 65 years
Davison: about 90 years
C. Baker: about 50 years
McCoy: exactly 56 years
McGann: at least 700 years
Hurt: about 400 years
Eccleston: about 1 year
Tennant: about 5 years
Smith: about 1200 years
Capaldi: not much, maybe just a few years (gives his age as 2000 in both Deep Breath and Extremis)

Of course, all this suffers from the many inconsistencies in the count of the Doctor's age.
For example, Pertwee said he was "thousands of years old" and the only estimate of his incarnation's age comes from subtracting Troughton's years from Baker's.
Then there's all the contradictory information about McCoy and McGann's age between the books and audios.
And then there's Tennant, who spends three years in space in The Infinite Quest and one year as prisoner of the Master, therefore I find it hard to believe that in Voyage of the Damned he was only three years older than Eccleston.
>>
>>85223228

This is wrong right away.

Hartnell was about 650 and then he was rejuvinated by 200 years making him about 450 as Troughton.

This is just an estimate based on the numbers that are repeated more often in the show (or in the EU when the show doesn't have any information). I have a lot of doubts about most of those figures. I even made three examples.

DOCTOR WHO: SHIT TRIPS Vol. 2
- The Anthology -

>Are you a true fan of Doctor Who?
>Have you ever written down a sequence of words?

If the answer is yes or no, then you are ready to contribute a literary masterpiece to the second /who/ collection of original Doctor Who-based short fiction.

/who/ did it once. Now, we're gonna do it again! Yet another entry in an age-old tradition of p̶a̶c̶k̶a̶g̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶f̶a̶n̶f̶i̶c̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶g̶e̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶g̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶m̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶a̶i̶r̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶l̶e̶g̶i̶t̶i̶m̶a̶c̶y̶ / celebrating the magic of Who and the talent of a community.

There are no limits (except the story must be at least 1 word long, and preferably not in excess of 10,000, it's short fiction you fuck).

>- Can involve any Doctor(s), companion(s), side characters, spinoff characters and beyond, as your heart desires
>- Can be in any style, whether it's "legitimate writing", "pisstake", or "shitpost".
>- Can be about absolutely anything
>- The main focus is on good fun in the vein of the wiki, although serious entries are allowed. (If you're going to write smut, maybe approach it with a degree of levity)

Stuck for ideas? Try starting with your favourite TARDIS team (or for timeliness, Whittaker 13th Doctor) and one of these authentic titles:
http://www.saberpunk.net/DoctorWho/DoctorWhoSerialGenerator.php
https://glyphobet.net/drwho

We are going to be starting an index on the wiki for the collection. Anyone can contribute, no signups/pitches required. If you have ideas, feel free to broadcast them.
The rest is self-explanatory. Format for uploading your work is up to you, as long as it can be conveniently copied across (and ideally don't spam long texts in /who/ directly). (Pastebin works well.)

BONUS: Anyone who wants to do cover art or "illustrations" is encouraged.

WE need more entries for classic as well as NuWho Doctors. Entries for Thirteen are accepted as well.

As I said, contradictions. That's entirely based on the different numbers given for T. Baker and Troughton, and who knows where Robert Holmes got his estimate from.
>>
>>85223988
sounds about right, i think i remember at least that
honestly sounds like mofft once again trying his fucking hardest to tamper with old who in every way he can
also after just watching an unearthly child its pretty clear the doctor doesn't really know how to fly the tardis, so it makes sense that he fairly recently stole it

Why did mcgann do so many audio books
Is there a reason why there aren't any more films or mini episodes like night of the doctor, which was fantastic btw
>>
>>85224339
What has he become?
used to be the handsome and flirty Captain jack, now acts like a mega fag
>>
Why did Moffat use Snowmen instead of the Yeti when he brought back the Great Intelligence? They'd have been much better tbqh.
>>
>>85224340
to be fair, he should have his own little tv series.
>>
>>85224340
Mini episodes like that only happen if they can somehow justify it as relevant to the series. Night of the Doctor was specifically a tie in to the 50th anniversary special.

McGann has done loads of audio dramas because he joined Big Finish not too long after Davison, Colin Baker and McCoy joined, and people liked it because it was an opportunity to hear him play the role he never got to on TV,

Moffat's Who has resulted in a massive worldwide expansion in the show. It's miles bigger in America and China than it ever was before, and the latter of those regions is now the main source of funding for the show because of how big it is there. Doctor Who is not a UK-only show, and with the constant decline in TV viewing figures as whole in the UK, Doctor Who needed to expand to survive.

I actually wish they'd kept the "regeneration is dying" aspect of End of Time. It gives it some weight and significance. There's not a great deal of jeopardy or peril in a man who's immortally unkillable, and there's not a lot of drama in regeneration if it's just a story-telling convenience brought on by changes in the production.

Regeneration is a form of rebirth, or reincarnation, which necessitates a death, but even if you believe continuity of consciousness is preserved, it's still terrifying.

I mean, think about it. If somebody told you that you were going to wake up tomorrow in a completely different body with a completely different personality, wouldn't you be scared? This is especially true of the Doctor, who knows that there's the possibility of his future incarnation becoming an agent of evil.
>>
>>85223047
I think people underestimate children. They've always thought of the Doctor as a man and suddenly seeing a woman would feel weird to them.
It's us adults who are burdened with the whole back-knowledge of female casting, glass ceilings, feminism, or just basically thinking about "why" this decision was made by the people in charge.

Children just see 13 and think "that's weird, I thought the Doctor was a man". I doubt little girls all over the world were jumping wildly thinking "finally, some representation!".
>>
>>85225072
Then have people get used to him and bemoan when he doesn't come back.
>>
>>85225120
What you describe is exactly how Moffat wrote 11's regeneration into 12, just without the "I LITERALLY die" part.
>>
>>85225140
>I doubt little girls all over the world were jumping wildly thinking "finally, some representation!".
I don't think they'd think of it in those terms, but there's a lot that shows kids like things and actually get a self confidence boost when they see themselves represented in media. It's a moment of "oh, they're like me!"
>>
>>85225140
Children can also learn and adapt
>>
>>85225120
Maybe the first time he did it but after a dozen changes he knows what to expect and should be at terms with it.
>>
>>85225070
>don't even provide sources
http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/doctor-who-season-10-ratings/
I know that sounds low, but the average BBC America show that airs new episodes like Orphan Black or Dirk Gently's will often get only 300K.
>>
>>85225093
>No they don't
Yes they do. The ratings we get are Live+7 ratings. They include people who watch on iPlayer within 7 days of transmission.

>>85225059
It's the main one and the most easily accessible one in the UK.
>>
>>85225159
Then do a few episodes a year in the season Who itself doesn't air in (If Doctor Who is in Spring, but the 8th Doctor's adventures in Autumn, and vice versa)

I'm sure Paul Mcgann would love to do it, and they could keep the budget low if they adapt and create small-scale episodes along the lines of Midnight.

Obviously I'm no showrunner so I'm vastly underestimating the work that would go into it.
>>
>>85224970
>>85224997

Do minisodes then and release them online or something? As the other anon said its something to fill up the space between breaks in the show.

Realistically he's the only Classic Who Doctor who could take up the role again on screen so I think they're wasting him while they have the chance to use him.
>>
>>85225120
>If somebody told you that you were going to wake up tomorrow in a completely different body with a completely different personality, wouldn't you be scared?
Of course I would. But the Doctor's done this so many times before. He knows what happens. Sure, his appearance and mannerisms change, his appetites might change and all that, but he knows through experience that he's still the same Time Lord. He keeps the memories of all his previous incarnations, their thoughts, their feelings, even if they're not currently his own.

10's overreaction annoyed me. It was a combination of RTD wanting to go out on an emotional bang, and the fact that Tennant was extremely popular. But it's not fitting of the Doctor to throw a hissy fit every time he regenerates, he should be used to it by now.
>>
So this is what you should do: let /who/ die. Just let this old thread gather dust. No one can open it, no one will even notice it. Let it become a strange little thing lurking on an archive. And over the hours, the world will move on, and the thread will be buried. And if you wanna remember me, then you can do one thing. That's all, one thing. Have a good life. Do that for me, anon. Have a fantastic life.
>>
Doctor Who is dead. /who/ is dead.
>>
>>85225309
>>85225316
It splits the brand, kids don't care about the eighth Doctor only a small audience of old fans. It;s the same reason Moffat tanked the mooted Doctor Who movie. There should only be one Doctor, the current TV Doctor driving the show forward. Looking backwards for fanwank purposes is not the place the show should go.

>>85225195
I meant that perhaps that reaction was something the BBC were hoping for, little girls being really happy to see a female Doctor, seeing them represented. But I doubt that's what the girls were thinking at all.

I totally agree with you about children liking to see themselves represented in media. It's why so many children's cartoons feature a lot more ethnic minorities in lead roles now. As a kid, you'd love that, of course you would. I just doubt that young children watching DW "identify" with the Doctor that much. Maybe the companion, but I don't think the Doctor.
