Both sides are right you know. Norm either always was or has become inherently nihilistic as he has consumed russian literature. He's a smart guy who convincingly plays the fool due to his knack for timing and his leaning into a joke no matter how low brow. The hosts identify that he lacks specific objectives and goals which he reveals when talking about his son. As a yungman men tend to do things in order to ultimately have sex. Now that he is older has had sex, a child, and a successful career he is sort of killing time. It's been noted since he wont play the game of hollywood to be in big productions where he has no control. He isn't anti social as he does interviews, but he's socially reluctant as he often would rather do things he finds more rewarding than activities focused on basic human interaction.

Is he selfish for wanting to live a plant like existence? Is it selfish to want to do things you find inherently rewarding? Does he owe anyone a continued fountain of entertainment? The only thing that keeps him working (and from gambling everything away it seems) is that he genuinely wants to provide for his son.
I bought his audio book off audible and like others think he made interesting decisions. After I finish it I hope I have some more consideration or insight on the guy.
norm is /our guy/

>always was or has become inherently nihilistic as he has consumed russian literature
Wrong. Norm's views on nihilism and religion pretty much echo Dostoevsky's views in that both believe that nihilism is destructive and both want to believe in God. But they just "want" to believe, they don't actually believe and that's the problem. He needs to find his own faith that he actually believes in if he wants to move on. Doesn't matter what it is, anything that saves him from nihilism is good enough.

norm has said numerous times he believes in god tho
>>85205410
So did Dostoevsky. I don't think they're actually Christian, they just want to be Christian. When Norm talks about God, he always questions stuff, he's not fully committed. He should find something he really believes in instead of trying to commit to something he doesn't really believe.

Why should he move on? Why should he not kill himself?
Wow interesting insight OP. I love Norms podcasts but if he doesn't give a shit anymore I'd be happy with a few more books knowing that he likes to write.

Reminder that Norm almost won this and that he would've had the million dollars if he didnt fuck around and throw away all his life supports when he obviously knew the answer. It's funny as fuck though
>that eric clapton bit
>the producers told me I cant ask if you know the answer now
Fuck, i identified myself a lot with him. Is he depressed? Should i see a therapist? Everything i do is for my family, since i've no goals or interests.
The Norm remains eternal and the fact that he's voluntarily fizzling out only makes his shine the more beautiful.
i just hope he doesnt overdose, commit suicide or eat himself to death.

He's so serious while doing the 9/11 bit. I'd be cracking up.

Does he lack ambition, drive, is he simply misanthropic, or socially reluctant. His situation is different from Patrice O'neal who was undeniably funny but never critically lauded and commercially successful.
I don't think the gambling was really a problem for him as he genuinely sees materialism as a burden rather than a sign of success. I attribute this to his humble beginnings and generally coming up away from the capitalist environment of the united states.
>norm is too pure for this world
>>85205494
I think he understands the futility of life without God and the redemption made available through Christ.
Ded Nerm
>norm
>russian literature
He's dumb as fuck, if he wasn't canadian I'd swear he was a southern redneck
>>85209455
I'm not american but since all my perspective of southerners from there was this guy from the simpsons and i never saw him with a single book what's the relationshipt between rednecks and russian literature?
>>85205673
Well that's exactly why you need faith. To have answers to the "why not kill self" question.
