I understand that but its super retarded when they're written as Astronauts who hold Phds and are doctors. if they would have been written as average joes on earth it would be more believable but this was just retarded.

they could have left that part out entirely, the probe not being in position and being hit by debris did nothing for the story, just created a full retard moment.
the time should have been used to introduce the characters a bit more and the backstory of what they found, what they expect etc.
