Well I don't think he's a mary sue but people say that since he's so powerful and he could master both the dark and light sides of the force, besides being friends with Luke and Lando, that he's a mary sue. And maybe the fact that he has a very fast ship.
Also maybe they think that since he's a videogame character he's everyone's "self insert"? I think he's flawed enough, I mean he kind of lost his shit in MOTS if I recall correctly. And he's pretty humble and low profile after that even though he's the main character of JO and JA.

As long as it's consistent I wouldn't have a problem. That's the beauty of the new star wars canon, there is a whole branch of Lucasfilm dedicated to making sure every book, comic, movie, etc takes place in a single universe with a strong continuity. The only time things get blurry is secondary adaptations of the movies

What I love most about Katarn is that he's for the most part a side character. I hate when extended stories in any universe have to make some big bad character that has to be more powerful than Vader/Sauron etc, this guy is just a mercernary, turned Jedi wrestling with some issues it makes him fit more realistically into the universe without breaking it into fanfic territory.

Depends what you are looking for. Thrawn is definitely written consistently, he feels like the old trilogy thrawn, but while those books felt like big star wars adventures, the new one is more of an Imperial political thriller where we get to see Thrawn work behind the scenes and rise up to Grand Admiral. Definitely the best imperial centric book in the new canon
