Did this really need to be so depressing?
Even the intended comedy moments felt awkward to laugh at seeing as it was sandwiched between torture and infanticide

Because the movie is a mixture of a biblical epic and a classic prison movie. We see Caesar's arc take its end with him as a martyr/religious figure/political leader all in one. He rises (no pun intended) from a leader to literally a mythical figure for the apes.

I mean he literally leads them to a promised land. He's a Jesus/Moses hybrid.
