Knoxville hit it on the head pretty well. Jackass was unique in that it branched off directly from skater culture, with almost every single cast member being a highly competent skateboarder and really well versed in how to fall without actually injuring themselves. It let them push the bar a lot further than most other groups were comfortable with.

Knoxville himself was unique in that he's the only one without the skater background, which provided a really solid contrast; when he fell you knew he was going to eat shit.

The "characters" were actually pretty likeable and it was fun to see them bounce off each other, which also gave you more empathy for them hurting themselves.

Honestly all the Jackass movies worked well because they had a consistent flow with some peaks and valleys.

This was also pretty decent. There were a few really funny moments, and even the stuff where it was purposely scripted (Who knows the legitimacy of the "unscripted" parts) was funny and a bit heartwarming.

They had a simple easy format. Great camraderie from the cast. Knoxville was a charismatic lead guy so it opened the door to normies watching. The soundtracks on both the show and the films were great.

If you watch the seasons from the start, it's a great build-up.

The seasons are literally the perfect amount of nostalgia, entertainment, comedy, and just stupidity, to be pretty good.
You can see their friendship build throughout the seasons and then the movies make it better too.

I watched all of the seasons over the course of about a week, and by the end, you really can tell that they were great friends. Great chemistry.

Bam's parents are cool.

1. Jackass, for all intents and purposes, was first.

2. It merged two different groups (CKY and Big Brother) together, with Bam and Knoxville (and to a lesser extent Steve-O/Erhen/Pontius) managed to quickly suss out which members were the most marketable.

3. The characters managed to play the gay/homoerotic element card well, back when gay was not forced onto everything and that gave Jackass an extra edge to it when being gay was still exotic and forbidden.

4. Most of all, Johnny Knoxville. Dude was handsome and appealed to men and women, his masochistic tendencies made him different from most guys out there, and he had a wicked sense of humor about shit.

5. Bam's shitting on his parents was never heard of at the time and again in an edgy sort of way.

I didn't get MTV2 until late in the 00s (due to my local cable sucking balls and not offering MTV2); by the time I got it, Wildboys had largely fallen off the channel while Viva La Bam was still being marathoned heavily.
