Moffat is stepping down as the show's head writer. Moffat is bad at writing female characters, he writes them as mary sue's, femme fatales and fan girls, you see this in Sherlock as well as Doctor Who.

You get mary sue characters with agenda-driven re-castings when the writers are afraid to give their female/black version of whatever flaws and don't treat it as incidental.

Best case scenario here is another interesting version of the character who's gender is relevant in specific contexts (episodes set in the past, on earth 'i'm not taking orders from a woman' etc) and a male companion who is assertive and isn't just eyecandy for the female audience in the same way as most of the female companions have been eyecandy.

Worst case scenario is that the 13th doctor's main character trait will be her gender and will have a dopey male companion with toned abs.

Until then, we don't know. It might be the best series they've done (imo it has been very slowly recovering from Russell T Davies reviving the show as a campy retro comedy drama in 2005, they've had to adapt to it being a permanent thing again, it could've been an edgier, more adult remake of an old show from the very beginning but the opportunity was wasted). but it could be hypocritical sjw bullshit. Different guy, but the quirk actually added a lot to the character rather than subtract from it. Matt Smith's tenure overall was one of the heaviest/darkest with him coming to grips with everything that he did, the people he killed, he was the man that forgot and lived a very long time trying to get rid of the weight that he carried.

This is what happens when you give a show to someone who generally doesn't care for it's history and would instead prefer to make their own "muh deep" stories. Moffat ruined it for me and I stopped watching after the god awful end of the 11th and start of the 12th. The show is about wacky space adventures not fucking psychology, and that's why the revival and original series were successful.
