I think you're dead wrong.

Doctor Who barely, if ever, actually lives up to its potential as a show.

It doesn't sustain sensible or interesting long term plot development to spite its insistence on trying.

It doesn't have character development except in the most banal and uninteresting ways possible.

Even taking into acount the poor characterisations, only two characters can have any depth at all and everyone else is just a crude caricature.

One reason. Female viewers. The male viewers have been watching since day one and are fans of the original run; the small amount of nausiating fan service that goes on keeps these sad people tuning in to week after week of the worst dreck you've ever seen.

But its females that kept the show going. A sci-fi show with a moderately large female base is huge, it keeps ratings going and it makes your show water cooler discussion material.

Women love shows with humour and a strong male lead. They also love romance, and you can see how this has been shoved into the show at the expense of intelligent story development. Tennant in particular cemented this demographic.

Once you have a female lead, even the jokes will be less funny. There wont be a single reason for women to tune in and I guatentee that will be the first demographic to tune out. Even if the white knight betas weren't already all watching doctor who, the few people that will tune into a show every week just because it validates thier politics arent going to outweigh the millions of women who simply wont have any reason to watch the show any more.

It might hold on in england for a while, but its going to tank badly internationally. That will mark the end of the production, and they will have finally trashed the brand so utterly that it wont be coming back again.
