I felt similarly at first, but ever since part 5 I have completely embraced the Dougie storyline, I'm loving every minute of it. It wasn't clear at first, but it is now clear that the emotional core of season 3 is Dougie, so obviously extremely important to the story Lynch wanted to tell, I don't think we'll see Cooper out of it until the final act.

Part 12 or 13 is maybe a possibility.

I have my doubts about a happy ending too, more expecting a bittersweet one. But I think it's gonna have some sort of conclusion in the sense of a somewhat satisfying season finale. Had Lynch confirmed this season is based on the scrapped sequels to FWWM? I'm starting to believe the idea that Davis and Bowie may actually make posthumous appearances, but it'll be footage from 25 years which Lynch filmed during the making of FWWM in anticipation of sequels and deliberately left out of Missing Pieces because it's plot critical. That footage of Davis floating through space was clearly filmed around the time of FWWM, and if Bobby's about to meet him then the scene may have already been filmed, but older Bobby will probably be edited into the scene.
