I haven't been in a situation where my father was murdered in front of me wit his murder approaching me with the intent to murder me as soon as he could get my gun away from me, so none.

But this is a movie about that situation, and celebrates his son for being a victim. It's the exact opposite of what made the moment in Stand By Me when the boy had his gun on the bully so good. You knew he would have done it, because he found the inner strength to protect his friend. This kid would never have done it, because he's a weakling.

Big picture you're probably right, but then and there it was just a father who had taken a path that got his wife and one of his kids killed, and he didn't want to see the remaining kid go down the same path.
It's less 'violence is bad' and more of a 'sins of the father' type thing. Then again Hanks' line of work can't really be compared to an act of violence in self defence.
At any rate I didn't like the movie, it has that weird schmaltzy Hollywood pretentiousness (violence is bad for instance) lots of movies 1999-2005 had, before 9/11 really set in and we got the gritty kinos 2006-2010 brought
