What is it with this "representation" meme in Hollywood lately? I'm all for diversity in movies, but it's almost like they're suggesting that people can ONLY relate to characters that are like them. I read a twitter post after Rogue One came out about how some Mexican man was in tears that he was "finally represented" by the shitty, boring Captain Cassian. Same thing happening with Wonder Woman, as if she is the first strong female character EVER.
Most of the movies and shows I grew up with (late 90s, earlier 00s) had plenty of boy and girl characters of different backgrounds, and I found them all relatable and likable. Never crossed my mind that "they have to be like me."

I thought he was Catalonian, not Mexican.

there are a few mexicans with clear european looks

i had a lot of trouble understanding this guy's dialogue
i'm a fucking white male but i shouldn't struggle to understand characters in star wars that don't have subtitles

I can only enjoy porn if there is a white person in it. I can't get off to any combination of races going at it if there isn't at least 1 white. I can see how people would have a similar thinking with movies.

Purely sexual purposes vs. story purposes

Privilege.

I thought he was like French or something until I saw the social media hype for the new "Mexican hero."
He just sucks. The actor, the character.

Minorities are insecure.

>it's almost like they're suggesting that people can ONLY relate to characters that are like them.
It has nothing to do with that. You're projecting how you feel (and how many white beta males like yourself) feel about fictional characters.
Diversity in film right now is about giving equal opportunity to actors of all races and ethnic groups. That's it. Nothing more. The fact that a lot of people are welcoming this change from the 99% "white" movies of the past and seeing other ethnicities being portrayed as well, is purely incidental.

Not OP, but this is the main argument that progressive use to push for diversity. It never really had anything to do with equal opportunity for actors (see asian actors and how 90% of the times diversity just means more negroes).

Luna seems likea cool guy. Blame the mouse and rogue ones painfully bad script
I don't get it either. I very often feel related to characters that are of different skin color or sex than me.
It's fucking stupid that in a movie that isn't about race someone needs to see a "Mexican" to feel related to him. There's no Mexico in Star Wars. And the only races they care about are alien species.

It's called social engineering and manipulation. The hacks at Disney think only white people like Star Wars because most characters are white. They want to capture every other race by adding token minorities, often in degrading roles like John Boyega. I think it just tells you how racist Hollywood execs actually are. they probably don't hang out with other races and think everybody does like them.

I get what you mean but what about that commercial against Ghost in the Shell where the Asian kid/chick couldn't read or watch anything that didn't have an "Asian female" as main character?
