Making it clear that Walter was a selfish egomaniac in it for the thrills was the best decision breaking bad ever made. If they'd kept trying to shove "he's actually a good person!" down people's throat, the entire show wouldn't have worked.

They did keep shoving that down our throats. Gilligan had to revert to comic book Nazi villains that came out of nowhere in the final two seasons in order to make Walt seem good by comparison.
Walt should have lost his humanity 100% as a result of his family being killed by the cartel. In fact Gilligan originally had planned to kill Walt Jnr off.

Walt knew it was his fault, he had been a weak-willed individual who conformed, compromised, and took shit his whole life. His pride wouldn't let him take anything lying down or have anything impede him anymore.
Not going to pin it all on Skyler, but you can tell she preferred the milquetoast, unambitious, easily controlled Walt. In the flashback where they were checking out their new house, Walt still had ambitions but she told him to calm down. One thing leads to another and Walt finds him just settling for anything. That became life to him and nothing was encouraging him to break from it, until the events that started the series.
