First off. I saw this during a limited Funimation theatrical release, and I'm not lying, probably 50 or more percent of the people in the theatre were seniors. Me and my girlfriend are 23 and we had an old couple in front of us and on both sides of us, the entire theatre smelled like old people.

Second off, people were checking their phones 30 minutes in. It was distracting. The old man sitting beside me fell asleep and I knew when he fell asleep because his breathing changed from quiet to slow and heavy and the old lady in front kept turning around to see who was making so much noise.

Third off, when the movie ended, only 1 group of fatass geeks awkwardly clapped. I felt so embarrassed for them, myself, and everyone around me. They started off clapping so confidently, like they thought they could get everyone else to clap too. Then the old lady on the other side of me was about to start clapping but when she saw no one else was joining along with them she changed her mind. Everyone left the theatre in dead silence.

Did you even watch the movie? Sure the theme is not as explicit. But it's still there. Much of the basic story is still intact. Same goes for the score. And I rather enjoy the documentary feel to it. KotM is the lesser of the two versions, though it's still a legitimately good film and complements the original cut nicely.

Every up until Cranston's death was fantastic. However, the second act was absolutely abysmal and the third act doesn't fully reward the viewer for their patience. Less than ten minutes of quality Godzilla material isn't good enough for nearly two hours of a dull human narrative.

I'd argue that Honda's first several Godzilla films (Gojira - Monster Zero) are unironically good and are among the best of the genre. Haven't seen the Japanese version of King Kong vs Godzilla, so I can't really comment on that one. Kaneko, Banno, and Anno also delivered great films. Not just the monsters or the fights. But the characters/actors, cinematography, score, and the narratives.

They got Godzilla himself mostly right. This movie's problems come from not only a lack of Godzilla himself, but from too much focus on a boring as fuck character that sucks ass. It felt like 2 thirds of the movie was just him and he fucking sucks. I wish the movie had focused on Cranston's character (sorry to beat a dead horse but it's true) or at least Serizawa and his qt assistant.
