The whole point is the antiquated southern texan man is a straw-man. Everyone on this show is superficial but behind their stereotypes they have human qualities that present themselves after you elevate them past their status as hillbillies.

It's supposed to humanize stereotypes by demanding their humanity in situational comedy. It pisses me off when people complain about Peggy being a shitty character because her underlying issues all have to do with a personal value system. Her self worth is tied to her humility as a mother, wife and woman and when those things are challenged she reacts irrationally, LIKE A HUMAN BEING.

Some episodes feature Hank's traditional values being ultimately more sensible (example: peggy being the artist) while some show that he is living in the past (being scared of Bobby's taste in music).
