I think the problem is that regular pop listeners don't like any kind of vaguely rock-like elements in music, for them they can't tell the difference between Nickelback and black metal. Whereas if you're someone who actually like rock/metal music, Nickelback are probably not hard enough for you to enjoy. They end up not pleasing anyone.
