Rape is considered such a heinous act because of religious beliefs. It's a law that is punished extremely harshly because of religious belief, not necessarily because it causes extreme harm to an individual.

We treat rape like such a heinous crime (comparable to murder in fact) because of the belief that a woman is "pure, innocent, and angelic" and that men are "dark evil sorcerers and their penis is a magic wand that corrupts women!" or "once a woman has unwanted sex she is forever cursed and doomed to be miserable for the rest of her life!"

The truth is that women can get over it through therapy. There's no scientific basis that rape forces a woman to be miserable or unhappy for the rest of their life.

We shouldn't have such harsh punishments for something that is based around a religious belief and/or superstition instead of scientific fact.

I'd need to see the sort of sentencing for the sort of comparison you draw between rape and murder but keep in mind that rape is essentially assault with a heavy emotional aspect. The cultural emphasis on sex and intimacy doesn't become any less significant on the psyche of the victim no matter how you try to remove it from the equation.
