Well he's more Spielberg than Spielberg Jr that hack JJ Abrams
at least with Nolan it seems like he loves Cinema. JJ just makes films because he doesnt want to get a real job

Neither of them are as good as Spielberg though. I doubt they could turn a cheap made for tv movie into a classic like Duel
nor do either of them infuse their film with the HEART that steven has. Even JJ rip off Super-8 felt empty and cheap (well the second half anyway). It was saved by the ending credits though
>>
Is Nolan the only director that can make blockbusters that don't feel like a blockbuster?

Johnny Movie of beardandglasses.com calls DUNKIRK a "Wild ride. A must see for movie heads!"

>harry styles performance

Whats the fucking problem hollywood? Is there not enough new talent to fill ranks because people know your run by jewish pedophiles? Or is it literally just an advertisement having a non-actor celebrity? Nepotism?

Harry Styles' audience are quite literally pre pubescent girls so I doubt they are looking to bring that audience to Dunkirk. Did he pay to have himself in there? If Nolan really is such a good filmmaker why is he foregoing the best possible actor in place of the best possible actor who is also a non acting celebrity? Sad!

WHERE IS THE BACKLASH AGAINST HIM! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!
>>
>>84841930

There's a reason why Nolan makes big bucks. He like Cameron makes a movie with the Box office in mind.Harry Styles probably comes with a huge fan base but probably doesn't ask for a huge salary like big stars. Come on look at the Big blockbusters this year. How many of them are original films ? Movies like Dunkirk are a tough sell and if Nolan despite his credibility wants to make big spectacles with expensive IMAX cameras like this has to make some concessions.(besides he seems to coaxed a good performance out of him anyways)

But just think about who one directions fanbase are. Literally little girls and fags, both of which I cant imagine want to watch Dunkirk, which is what is confusing. Id imagine that a lot of people who like war movies would think hes a fucking faggot which should be a turn off. I dont think hes in it for the fans but maybe just a flashy name for critics to grab a hold of. Bravo Nolan.

>>
>>84842868

Actually the germans avoided the maginot line and did start their invasion through Belgium in the Ardennes region, which was considered impassable for heavy vehicles.

The problem was that the commanders of all allied forces (belgians, dutch, french and brits) were retarded at the beginning of the war. And when the shit hit the fan all armies stopped to arrange things between them and started acting without any consultation with the others.

The "success" of Dunkirk basically only relied to courageous acts made by isolated allied units.

To be fair, everybody laughed when Justin Timberlake started acting and he actually turned out to be half-decent. Same with Mark Wahlberg, Will Smith, Arnold Schwarzenegger....there are a surprising amount of people who can easily break into acting and do just fine with minimal prior experience.

I thought DUNKIRK was heads above most everything else this year. Pure, maximum cinema. All sea and sky and Rylance.

#Dunkirk is the first Nolan film that really connected with me on an emotional level. The plight of these people is palpable.

Nolan channels Hitchcock in #Dunkirk, effortlessly creating suspense. SEE THIS IN 70MM, PLEASE!!

Dunkirk is a war film, but not like one I've ever seen before. It's the closest I could imagine to being there. It's loud and brutal.

DUNKIRK is 1 of the most immersive cinematic experiences I've ever had. Mind-blowing non-linear storytelling.

Dunkirk is a truly Nolanesque, cold film. It's not drum-banging patriotic propaganda, it's bleak, coarse and unrelenting.

It's extraordinary - a harrowing, unusual war film, without heros or easy story notes. Staggering pics. Unnerving score.

Dunkirk is incredibly immersive, visually stunning filmmaking from the great Christopher Nolan. Very different from his other films!

The thing about this film is it very consciously veers away from character development. It's very in-the-moment kinda filmmaking.

Saw Dunkirk first thing this morning. Still recovering. It's Inception meets The Longest Day.

I saw #Dunkirk, and it's a triumph for all involved. Relentlessly tense and superbly crafted, it feels like an instant classic.

So we've seen Dunkirk and we can confirm it is brilliant. Nolan never lets the suspense falter - it's harrowing and unusual and beautiful.

Christopher Nolan's @dunkirkmovie uses the massive imagery of 70mm IMAX to tell a most remarkable story of human-scale heroism. Masterfully.

You don't merely watch @dunkirkmovie; it washes over you and envelops your senses, like the waves that crash upon its rocky shores.

I can't believe what I just saw. Dunkirk is a masterpiece. My heart is still racing. Suspense at its finest. WOWOWOWOW!!

Dunkirk: survival horror disguised as a war film. Almost unbearably tense at times, and doesn't outstay it's welcome.

The reason he was cast is obvious. Nolan's claimed he didn't know how famous he was but that's a blatant lie.
The studio would never give Nolan the budget for a WW2 movie in this day and age with only Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy being the only big names attached.
They have to know they're going to make all their money back and then some and this film has no female characters. In their eyes that means no female audience.
How do you solve that? Give a role to an aspiring actor who will inevitably draw a huge female crowd. He can probably act fine and if he was an unknown I'm sure he wouldn't be a distraction.
What annoys me is how coy Nolan is being about it. Why not just admit he's a huge star but say he can act anyway? Lying about how much you knew about him before casting him just makes me skeptical the authenticity of his role in the film desu.

I have watched hundreds of movies spanning an entire century. I've watched everything from z-grade exploitation films, to brainless blockbusters, to avant-garde abstractions that can scarcely be considered "movies" in anything beyond the broadest technical sense, and I say with neither fear nor reservation that Snyder is an unheralded genius whose star will only continue to climb as long as there remain people who love films.

Just so you understand, it's your insistence on parsing things down with no consideration for gestalt meaning that renders every single argument guys like you and every other proponent of the "series of moments" crowd have cases-in-point for just how flawed your understanding of his films really is. Those "cool images" aren't just pretty and cool. They're part of the narrative. They're conveying meaning and they're doing so in a way that is largely absent from anything remotely mainstream.
>>
>>84848065
I like Watchman and 300, but damn dude. He's just a blockbuster director with a few good ideas (the Watchmen opening titles, the fresh-at-the-time speed changes during the fights in 300). That shot you posted is "standard religious imagery #37."
>>
>>84848970
>it's your insistence on parsing things down with no consideration for gestalt meaning that renders every single argument guys like you and every other proponent of the "series of moments" crowd have cases-in-point for just how flawed your understanding of his films really is.
You're the one who started comparing specific imagery from the film to Joss Whedon's work.
>>
>>84843263
This.
>>
>>84848849
I'm saying it outright. The cloud and horses in the painting are represented in the form of the woman and her outstretched arm.

If you say that's coincidence in a film that mentions gods in general and sun gods in particular and whose plot centers on a sun-based "god figure," I'd say it's you who's stretching credibility.
>>
>>84849067
And predictably, you ignore the broader context of the statement precisely the same way you apparently watch films.
>>
>>84849146
The broader context of the statement is that the way in which I ignore the gestalt and parse things down to specificities shows a flawed understanding of film, yes? And I'm saying that I never parsed the film down to specific scenes or imagery. You're the one who did that with this post >>84848318

I'm not. Again, you're the one bringing up specific imagery and comparing it to the work of other directors. I merely addressed your comparison and made comment on the image.
>Or can we both just admit that your refusal to do so is mainly due to it running counter to your whole argument?
My initial argument was simply that the specific image from the film - which you brought - is a tired and derivative motif. The existence of more examples of hamfisted allusions to mythology in the film doesn't really run counter to that point at all.

Because Supes hasn't caused mankind to fall due to their own overreaching hubris yet. He's learning that when you're Superman, holding yourself apart from mankind is synonymous with holding yourself above, and that he can't do that without being mistaken for some kind of god.
>>
>>84849597
I sincerely doubt it. Basic background-foreground composition and a silhouette surrounded by god rays aren't exactly original ideas.
>>
>>84849794

Correct if I'm wrong, but isn't BvS about the hubris of Supes himself rather than the hubris of humanity. I think the comparison to Apollo and Icarus doesn't really hold up in that case.

No, it's not about his hubris. It's about him coming to terms with the consequences of his actions and confronting his guilt over the events of MoS, up to and including how he feels about having to kill Zod.

There's not an ounce of hubris in that, just a ton of denial and a degree of obliviousness concerning the impact that knowledge of his existence has had on human society as a whole.
