>They're still shit, but at least you're not starving or getting sent to the gulag

Gulags were discontinued in the 50s and people in the vast majority of the USSR had a standard of living comparable to the Western European countries, with Russia having a standard of living even BETTER in many respects (more vacation time, better education, a shitload more culture, etc.)

There's a case to be made for the Baltic states being better of with the collapse of the USSR, but they're basically the only ones.

you're correct in gulags being a meme but speaking as a slovak and to my knowledge the entire v4, it's a lot better now in the 2010s than before the fall of USSR. i admit that the 90's were tougher and you could argue it was better before that. it wasn't the absence of communism that made it tough but not being properly prepared for it. there were so many fucking loopholes around that time anyone who wasn't mother theresa and had a triple digit iq could make bank at the state's and people's expense, especially the politicians themselves.
>>
>>84826911
What he says is true: Gulags stopped being seriously terrible after the 30s (in that time, around a million died for political reasons) and were pretty much alternative prisons in all functions, ending in redundancy, and the Holodomor (that being, using famine to control population in a zone usually striken by it in the time) was pretty much a fabrication.

I've known Tommy now for the better part of seven years now -- as well as someone could "know" Tommy.

Tommy and Greg had a bit of a falling out after the release of the Disaster Artist and Best Friends was Greg's attempt to make up for what transpired after that. Tommy finally "approved" of the Masterpiece after its SXSW soft-opening but that was clearly going to be made regardless of his approval.

Tommy's a smart guy. He isn't traditional but he knows how to make money through small transactions. He can always draw a crowd to his events.

Years ago he seemed to not really like his crowd and sort of used Greg as a crutch but as they grew apart he's become a lot more appreciative of his audience. I think the audience has become more mature with time as well. There's always weirdos, but its hard not to respect someone thats made a career off this film.

His new all-american-boy and co-star from the Neighbors is sort of mirroring Greg's style of taking as much as he can from Tommy in return for friendship and being Tommy's lacky. But at least his new boy has ambition outside of mining Tommy's pockets and trust.

What a backstabbing piece of shit honestly, Tommy is the only reason anybody knows who he is.
>>
>>84833690
Pretty sure he talked to Tommy before releasing the book. Half the shit Tommy said is likely bullshit anyway.
>>
>>84833690

Seriously. Greg even paints a picture of a lonely, nice, if incredibly weird and eccentric guy. Like over the course of that whole book there's almost nothing to make you dislike Tommy. He's utterly baffling, but nothing to hate.

Shit sucks. I felt kind of bad for reading it afterwards.

Tommy was extremely manipulative and rude though. He was likable at times, but at other times extremely childish and malevolent in an offputting, not charming, way.

Not defending Gregg, but I think both of them are complex individuals who both needed one another and yet use one another. Its a strange relationship, but a lasting one at least.

People talk about him like he's dumb, and maybe he is, but I feel like his mind is just too alien for normal measures of intelligence.

I've watched interviews with him, and he has this seamless way of starting out with a simple statement and gradually progressing into absolute nonsense. I've tried to pause videos and follow his tangents before, and I actually can't. It's not stupidity so much as it is an ability to develop extremely tenuous or nonexistent connections between things.

I met Tommy last June. There was one of the showings where he's present for the film. He invited those with nearby birthdays onto the stage and I got up with a couple other people.

I should mention his appearance at this point. He was wearing True Religion Jeans, some kind of suspender thing attached but not over his shoulders, a Bugatchi-esque shirt, and his hair was soaking wet with what looked to be oil. He's actually pretty small IRL compared to what I expected, petite build.

I snapchatted it with a couple others and he yelled at us. Then apologized profusely. Then made some joke about how he likes flip phones. At this point he got close enough that I could clarify he had actual peanut oil in his hair. He smelled tremendously of peanuts.

He invited us up but like didn't interact with us. So there were like 15 people on stage while he answered 30 plus questions. It was bizarre and hilarious.

When we all sat back down he sauntered to the lobby. I was like, well fuck I should just catch him in the lobby. So I follow him out and I walk up without a plan.

"Hey Tommy! Big fan, I'm so glad you could come out."

"Yeah hae hae it is gre-eet.... I like eet."

Face to face with the guy I didn't know what to say, but I decided to go the route of trying to come off as a genuine fan and see what happened.

"So I like to write screenplays and I've considered dabbling with production or stuff like that. Do you have any tips, or a creative method that you've found has resonated?"

"Ha ha ha"

I just kind of nodded. I asked for a picture and it came out pretty horrible.

"Thanks Tommy."

"Ur thee best."

I dunno how to describe the level of just absurdity. Typing it out doesn't do it justice. He's fucking odd. Like, unbelievably fucking odd. I've never felt so much like I had met an extraterrestrial.

Tommy is still trying to get this movie banned. The filmmakers have constantly recut the movie, editing out so much to please Tommy and even though Tommy was fine with the cut they gave him months ago to look at, he again isn't pleased with it.

He claims Greg made up a lot of stuff about him in the Disaster Artist and so since this documentary is based on the book, he doesn't want anyone to see it.

I was spoiled on all the major funny parts from the flash game and youtube clips, so when I actually sat down to watch the movie, it was just bad instead of hilariously bad.

>>84838688
I don't think it'll be good. They might get some of the funnier parts down, but I don't think Rogan and the Francos can do anything emotional, i.e. anything that doesn't fit their narrow dude weed lmao brand of humor.

Tommy's bizarre, but there's a certain amount of heart to him that I don't think they'll be able to (or even bother trying to) capture.

I've seen it twice in the cinema. Legendary

So has anyone managed to work out how Tommy is so rich and how he was able to afford the most expensive film cameras of the early 2000's, buying so much out of his own pocket when making the Room and refusing to hire any equipment?

Did he have a rich grandma or something?
>>
>Greg is doubtful about the checks Tommy gives him for his work
>goes to the bank to investigate
>teller slips up and tells him not to worry
>because the Wiseau account is "a bottomless pit"
How fucking rich is Tommy? Seems like he made a killing in real estate.
Is Tommy secretly a genius?

>there has to be extra steps between selling toys/jackets to owning prime real estate
you don't know how much money these people make in the streets my man. I rented a house from a dude that sold clothes, rugs and blankets from the back of his car and he had built 3 houses and still had space for one more in his lot which he's currently building.

Despite being pretty shit at filmmaking/acting. Tommy is some sort of autistic savant when it comes to business. At least according the book.

It's kind of sad in a way to have your talents and your dreams not aligning.

>Seems like he made a killing in real estate.
San Francisco Bay Area real estate prices are utterly ridiculous, especially in San Francisco proper.

Buying an apartment in San Francisco will easily cost you a million dollars in today's market. If the book is true, Tommy owns an entire fucking building in a prime tourist location, if not multiple buildings.
>>
>>84840228
How do you guys not realize that tommy in all likelihood comes from a rich dinasty (noble people or not, doesn't matter)
>>
>>84839734
Hi, doggy.
>>
>>84838402
i know why Tommy still talks like that, but couldn't Greg have tried acting?
>>
>the you unironically enjoy The Room

Especially after the revelation that wiseau had originally wrote it as a play, everything about the whole production makes more sense. It's like he did a 1:1 adaptation of a play that never existed, the madman.

Even if he wrote it as a play, he still managed to fuck it up.
Dogville is a movie written and shot as a play, but somehow worked out in the Art House genre.

>>
>>84841500
Sure, I'm not saying it isn't bizarre and misguided, but it certainly makes the viewing of it more enjoyable with that in mind. Like I imagine others have attempted and failed miserably too. Dogville is certainly a good example of how to pull this off, though.
>>
>>84820693
How do you think Tommy felt reading this? Especially the part about no detectable talent. I wonder if he and Greg are still friends. I guess so, it's not like Tommy has anyone else.
>>
>>84820703
To be fair he stuck beside Tommy for years and years despite all of Tommy's narcissistic insanity, bullying and attempts at manipulation and was basically Tommy's only friend.
>>
The Room's secret to success is being a sunday evening TV film with an outstandingly extravagant person doing the role that was made for a nondescript failed model.

It's like making a romcom with Klaus Kinski without any sort of irony.

Supposedly he was hit by a drunk-driver when he was younger which explains his disfigured face, scars and droopy eye.
