Some exceptional directing. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Started to rust a bit near the end when Ham's character turned standard.

Loved final end. Seems to me that he is still in jail. The dream was another period-themed vision, not actual release.

The movie doesn't start until Baby rams his car into the back of that truck instead of driving away, marking the first time the main character stops passively doing whatever he's told and acts to change the course of the main plot. This is the inciting incident and it takes place almost an hour and a half into the movie. Also, swapping Bats for Buddy as the villain Baby eventually has to face off against does defy expectations, but in my opinion it's not nearly as satisfying as actually letting that built up confrontation explode would have been.

When Baby rammed the car into the back of the pickup truck and Bats died brutally my jaw genuinely dropped. Shit was brutal as fuck, I guess Edgar learned a thing or two from when him and Quentin Tarantino lived together. The whole footchase was so fucking tense, Wright did such a good job of making the danger the characters were put in feel real.
>>
Why would Kevin Spacey keep hiring Bats? Bats was unstable and kept fucking things up? Also why does he have missing fingers?

Still doesn't change the fact that they happened and could lead to the crew being tracked (clerk) or chemistry of the crew being disrupted (which it was, given Baby's reaction in the diner and Darling's at the gas station). Post office should have been the last time Spacey hires Bats for a while.

You're right, but the point is that Spacey didn't know the extent of Bats craziness and how hard to work with he was.
He put him in his team twice, that must mean that despite being a crazy sociopath he was damn good at the job.
>>
>>84826824
Batts was damn good at his job. He's arguably more reliable than Buddy and his coke-whore. Problem was that he was antagonistic as hell, for some reason, and pissed off Baby to the point of it all falling apart.

I thought the music thing got old and the song choice mediocre with only a couple exceptions. The music video he directed using the same meme well before the movie was made was better than each sequence in baby driver.

Also spacey doing a 360 and walking away at the end because "i loved once" was shit lad
>>

>Bats is good at his job
I will not dispute this, he definitely gets the results Spacey wants. All I'm saying is that he is high risk along with high reward member of the crew. His job at the post office was real simple and could've been done by another, more stable criminal.
Also, when Spacey said they acquired the card key for post office and the time for the armored truck drop off from "a friend with a nasal problem", what did he mean by that? I assumed it meant they broke the dude's nose, but could it have meant coke problem too?
>>

Okay I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the sudden change was odd. Like he goes from interesting robber partner to generic movie villain 568.

I dunno, I get his motives and all, it just seemed jarring for some reason, not even sure why
>>
>>84814579
It made me want to break out my old iPod. I forgot how great the click-wheel was for browsing/volume/rewinding, etc.

The movie goes a little of the rails with Kevin Spacey's character sudden change-of-heart and Buddy turning into the terminator. To be fair, though, it didn't bother me at the time because of how enthralled I was with it.
>>
>>84827053
I'm not sure how he survived the foot chase from the cops, then the car breakdown in the mall, then the diner, then the parking lot.

Am I missing one? It was retarded. A simple re-write could've fixed that mess entirely.

I did like that he fucked Baby's ears up though.

The pro of Bats is that he's probably up for any job at any time because as he says "I do drugs to support a robbery habit" and he's got a lot of experience. It just seems that Bats leaves too big a trail of destruction in his wake for some like Doc. Doc's not opposed to killing people, but he definitely seems to be the type that wants his crew to be untraceable before and after the crime. Bats killed the gas station clerk, the bank guard, and he was about to kill Debora too, all because he either wanted to or they were in his way. That guy's a timebomb.

how did he know Baby would escape? it's still al liability that he can get caught by the cops if you watch the end, he doesn't escape

why not kill baby himself?

protip: if you have to make up what is going on inside a character's mind, with no supporting evidence, just to tell yourself that the movie was well written, then you're the fucking stupid one
>>
>>84827247
>>baby agreeing to do the heist at the end when kevin spacey gives him an out

Correct me if I'm wrong, but what Spacey gave him was a false "out". If Baby backed out, then Bats would drive him home and Bats was definitely going to kill him. Baby knew that, even if Doc didn't which is why the moment Bats says that he'll drive Baby home, Baby decides to help with the robbery.

>>84827287
>The soundtrack being the tastes of a lame try-hard 40 year old, and not a 20 year old from Atlanta is another extremely reddit aspect.

That struck me too. I guess the movie doesn't want to seem dated by picking out contemporary songs, but it doesn't make sense that all Baby listened too were oldies. Where's the southern folk or the rap?

One thing I really liked about this movie was that it subverted the band of rogues trope that's been in recent movies a lot. Buddy and Darling talk about killing Bats and menace Baby and his family. Agreed, the third act was a bit weak, reason why I gave it 4/5 stars. How did the cop that survived the arms deal know where Spacey's hideout was? Why did Spacey (who imo would be able to walk away from the botched job a lot easier than the crew members) risk his life for Baby? i was half expecting Spacey to be at the diner instead of Buddy, but that was a nice twist.

Basically all it would've taken was one more scene to really drive home the fact that Spacey actually cared about Baby as a pseudo-father figure. This movie plays on cliches and expectations, then flips them on it's head.

You thought Buddy would be a father figure that Baby never had? Nope.

You thought Darling was gonna live? Nope.

You thought that Baby would drive off into the sunset? Nope - goes to jail.

This movie, and other Edgar Wright movies do what Tarantino and Rick and Morty do best.

Which is set up a cliché or obvious setup, then flip it on it's head.

One of my favorite movies this year. Really exciting and had some pretty tense moments. Jamie Foxx's best performance in a while, would love to see him in more roles as a bad guy. Ansel wasn't very charismatic, the only thing going for him is that he's cute and seems like a nice guy. Baby and Debora's relationship slowed the movie down. And I liked Big Boi and Killer Mike's brief cameo.

This is more how I felt.

I gave it a 6/10. Great stylish directing, nice gimmicky music, some good choreography like that early one take and first chase. Some decent tension here and there. Interesting story.

But paper thin characters, cliche as fuck tropes, tries to be realistic in some areas but not in others and ends up being tone deaf, a romance plot that motivates his attempt to leave but which is rendered redundant by how his father and he HIMSELF wanted to leave anyways.

Stupid last act with weird motivation and 0 explanation for how he gets away with this shit.

These movies aren't the cornetto trilogy anymore. You can't get away with "he drove" or "he's just that good" or "its a comedy". Baby Driver was very deliberately more realistic and serious but it had a lot of plot holes that pissed me off coming from Edgar Wright.

Even the music trolls the viewer into thinking it's a different/more popular song.

I felt like Baby had too many quirks. He has a tragic back story and he is an expert car thief and also an expert driver and has a cool disability AND he's a music producer AND records random conversations AND he has a disabled black foster parent.

They should have stuck with three or so characteristics and really strengthened them.

The only bad thing about this film was Radar Love wasn't used for longer.
