I kept seeing it everywhere, so I thought I'd watch it.

It's not that bad of a movie, and the dream sequence with the bowling and the old Kenny Rogers/First Edition song was good, but it's really not as great as people make it out to be.

A bunch of different reasons, it's a very smart flick if you look at it as an exercise in appealing to demographics. Boomers will love it because the dude is some guy that many of them almost knew, gen-xers will love it for its perceived satire of said boomers, millennials love it because it harks back to pre-911/internet/invasive social media times, potheads of all ages love it because it's so left field so often, with situations and characters that seem believable or at least relatable after about the third J.

If you want to look at the film from another POV it's supremely well made, with many recurring motifs tying the film together really well, excellent use of music from the dude's youth, some hallucinatory dream sequences, excellent chemistry between virtually all the players but especially bridges/goodman/buscemi, a great portrayal of non-Hollywood 90s LA and its somewhat frazzled underclass of that time. It's one of those movies that in being half a step from reality actually ends up being really quite relatable overall - we've all known how the dude has /felt/ at some point, if not been in his same situation.

That said, the story is pretty weak and the film doesn't even bother to pretend it cares about it, which I could see as being annoying for some.
