Genius, extraordinarily gifted comedian, director, actor, writer and intellect. His later films, like A King in NY and Verdoux are underrated.

To me, it’s the most embarrassing thing in the world—a man who presents himself at his worst to get laughs, in order to free himself from his hang-ups. Everything he does on the screen is therapeutic.

His films were filled with dull humour and egregious sentimentality. He lacked sincerity in his melodrama, unike Griffith, and his comedy never had the poignant effect of Keaton because it seemed Chaplin was in on the joke. If I had to define Chaplin with one word, it would be "insincere". He got worse as he got older, as in Limelight, because he wished to use the same paint brushes as the artists who were greater than he.

That's not why I dislike his films though. Mizoguchi is a director whom I like despite his political inclination, which shaped his career as a director.
