How the fuck did this idiot succeed Johnny?
No charisma, no personability, shit monologues.
>>
>>84692222
>No charisma, no personability, shit monologues.
I agree, but ratings say otherwise.
Who cares? You didn't have to watch it.

OJ Simpson jokes.

No, seriously. His ENTIRE shtick during the 90s was "Dude, OJ LMAO" even before the murder.

My uncle used to trade cars with him
>>
>>84692222
You know how when you watch old Carsons, half of him seems savvy like Letterman, and half of him seems really conservative and cornball? Well, most of America was watching for the latter aspect, not the former. Hence Leno. And Letterman himself lost a lot of edge when he went to CBS to occupy the Carson equivalent spot.

Jay Leno never spent his Tonight Show salary, but lived entirely off what he earned as a stand-up. That lifestyle was affordable off of what he made from people *paying* to hear him tell jokes. Once you know that, no wasted promise or unfairly marginalized work in the history of American pop culture is a mystery. America is a country that will pay Leno.
>>
>>84692222
he's pretty funny but his tonight show tenure was okay at best
>>
>>84692222
His face reflects light well. NBC figured out that this would save them about $300 in lighting over the course of his career compared to Letterman so it was an easy choice.
>>
big fat suckable dick
>>
>>84692222
I'm not the biggest Leno fan, but he had a ton of charisma and personality at the time. Jay was literally the perfect light night guest before Tom Hanks came around, and he had killed it several times filling in for Carson before they gave him the reigns. What a waste of quads.

Reminder Johnny wanted Letterman to have his show but the execs chose Leno instead because they're assholes and supposedly Carson had a long feud with them in the 80s

Hi Jay

dave was dirty with sexual harrassment in the workplace, illegitimate kids, and a gambling addiction.

>>
>>84692656
To be fair, Carson was a mean son-of-a-bitch, as has gradually been acknowledged, and finally having the opportunity to get rid of the prick's influence, it's understandable that they took it.
>>
>>84692712
>dave was dirty with sexual harrassment in the workplace, illegitimate kids, and a gambling addiction.

Had any of that already happened?
>>
i dunno but i bet its the same guys that thought conan was ready for the big time who then proceeded to reconstruct his show from like 1995.
>>
>>84692744
Letterman's gambling addiction has been on and off for decades
Open secret and all that
>>
What the majority of people want from a late night host is that they are warm and non threatening. This is why Jimmy Fallon is still around. While Letterman's shtick was a bit edgier, it rubs the older people the wrong way, and they're the biggest audience for late night.
>>
He was pretty funny during the early-mid 90's but then jaywalking became really popular and so he put little effort into the show. The writers strike force him to write his own jokes and that actually resulted in his best work in years.
>>
>>84692764

>>
>>84692536
I don't know much about Leno's standup after he got the Tonight Show, but many comedians will tell you that early on he was a very highly regarded stand-up.
>>
>>84693147
Fuck Team Coco. Jay was a cool guy who never wanted to leave his late night show in the first place. NBC forced him out to make way for Team Coco. Coco failed hard because Team Coco hipsters didn't tune in. Jay was offered the job he never wanted to stop doing in the first place. Coco refused to go back to following Jay's show because he has a chip on his shoulder, and Jay is the bad guy?

Fuck that, Fuck Jimmy Kimmel, and FUCK HOWARD STERN!
Jay may not have always been funny, but he was a nice guy.
>>
>>84692222
I agree. I was just watching a lot of his Jay Leno's Garage vids on YouTube and he was annoying as fuck. Had no idea what he was talking about when it came to celebrities and culture, he wasn't remotely funny, and random no-name car builders were more likable than he was. Joe Rogan and his mechanic were way more entertaining and funny in the episode they were featured in.

It pissed me off seeing his multi-million dollar garage and being reminded that he "earned" all that by being an unfunny borderline retard.

>>
>>84692222
>No charisma, no personability, shit monologues.
That's what the audience that show is directed at wanted. No drama, no controversy, just nice plain old Jay, every night. Letterman was the edgy one the kids stayed up for - your mom and dad liked Jay.
>>
>>84692375
Lets be honest - he has working steam engines, because he has some talented mechanics on a payroll.
>>
>>84692536
The money he lived off was not stand up comic money. Most of the money was corporate gigs. Our company hired him for an event, and he wasn't cheap. I think it was 25K, and that was over a decade ago. He did very little work outside of corporate gigs, after he started doing the Tonight Show.
>>
>>84692222

I liked him more than Letterman.

Anyone remember Arsinio Hall? We need a black talk show host like that again. Fuck these shits like Trevor Noah. Who's idea was it to have somebody from South Africa, which is a total shithole: talk shit about America?
>>

>>
>>84693931
I started watching letterman from day one. I used have bad insomnia in high school, and I'd watch the show that was on before him, Tomorrow with Tom Snyder (who had incredibly good live music, like the Ramones, The Cars, a whole bunch of bands). The early days Letterman was incredible - he'd have pee wee on and just let him go for an hour. He was a lot more relaxed and funny then. I watched him religiously until he moved to the new slot on CBS, and it just wasn't the same.

Except Colbert for instance, genuinely has an agenda that he pushes.

Remember when the vault 7 papers were leaked by wikileaks and suddenly the public found that the CIA could spy on them through Smart TV's and the like?

No need to worry! Who does Colbert have on his show the following week to calm the nation? None other than former director of the CIA and NSA, Michael Hayden! I sure know he has our best interests at heart.

Stop being so naive.

There's a lesson in observing Leno age compared to Letterman and Howard Stern. It's weird but with the latter, they've curdled into these PC New Yorkers, full of themselves. Letterman is hanging with Alex Soros, he's like an old bitter Colbert. I hated Leno, hated his neocon bullshit during Bush, but I've watched 100+ of his Garage videos, and you gleam how his mind works. That's who he always was, he didn't need network spotlight. Letterman did.

Would have been comfy to see Leno in the Trump years, though. He represented an America that was a big couch, now it's some postmodern sofa with two hipster fags making out as mom approvingly watches. Wish I had 250 muscle cars to see the sunset in. His Pat Morita buddy cop movie is a must watch, so stupid.
>>
>>84694501
Trump and Hillary work for the same people and are related to one another. We were fucked either way.
>>
I grew up watching this regularly for around the first ~10-14 years of my life. I don't quite remember when I finally stopped watching. I enjoyed the monologues and the little whatevers that came after, like Headlines, or showing off 99c toys, and so on. I thought it was creative and amusing.

One such toy was a thing to put on the top of a Christmas tree but in stead of a star, it was a little paper cutout of Whitney Houston's face with a small table platform thing where she could 'snort' 'crack' (white confetti-ish material) like it was a snow effect. Then again that was a less-censored time of society. Also, of course, these are opinions made when I was very young.

Leno's soft right politics and corporate lap dog personality were very attractive to the right wing drift the Military Industrial defense contractor General Electric (GE) wanted to see reflected in its new branch, NBC.

And it wanted its flagship show to more reflect the personal and political interests of CEO Jack Welch and the owner/investors in general, which was newly enabled by a Georgia Republican Federal Judge ruling the Fairness Doctrine as illegal, destroying the basis to control and regulate the content, use or ownership of the Public Airwaves.

I still remember the mid 1980s when NBC would actually have reports on the state of Poverty in America, and the night Tom Brokaw explained that unregulated medicine in the USA resulted in people being charged hundreds of dollars for a medicine, when the SAME medicine with a different name was marketed to VETERINARIANS for $3.00 a dose.

It's always been anarchic leaning, but during Bush Jr it was largely left leaning, it took a while for it to switch rightwing during Obama's stint, and now that another 'conservative' is in charge it will begin to shift left again. Because 4chan is contrarian, it is the internet hate machine. It is where people come to vent and rage and call each other faggots for liking different things. Why would you ask that to begin with? That has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. America becoming isolationist means sacrificing influence over other nations in Asia and elsewhere.
>>
>>84695647

Isolationism, originally was a movement against immigrants, I mean, you might be an American or somebody elsewhere, but at some rate I don't expect you to know the history. Isolationism originally, was withdrawing our military from other nations, attempting to get a better value from our currency and creating commerce with other nations. Then the European fuckfaces dragged us into WW1 Granted, a lot of us went to Canada to enlist because they had killed our relatives in Europe.

Well, outside of several that are important, why bother with the others? We've already created the 1st, or the 2nd best intelligence agency ever. Keep that organized and running. Then fuck the rolling donut that is the others.

If you need military influence to maintain your intelligence network, your intelligence network sucks.

WTF?

Leno was a kiss ass who would follow NBC's orders, Letterman was his own man and unpredictable.

Was there ever any serious consideration for Norm taking a spot at CBS?
I think Norm would be too much for the typical late night audience.

I don't know. But Norm was Daves final guest. And The Sports Show was the funniest thing I've seen on tv since like... season 11 of south park.

Leno has very quick wit. He just didnt bother being funny talking to American Faggot #93001. Just ask them about their funny story, their new tv show, how the wife or husband is, then get paid.

I'm an American, and I know exactly what he did. It's a common practice to hate people who have money for no fucking reason. It's the most retarded thing ever. Rather than trying to figure out how to make that money, it's a retard game practice of figuring out how to hate the guy and make more money than he has. Why? because he exists. it's insanely counter-productive. Why make more money than him proiducing artisane shotguns when you can be a complete prick and complain about everything?

I've heard this from several comedians I actually enjoy and respect, so I watched several of his major pre-Show standups and did not find any of it even slightly funny, original, charismatic or "powerhouse"-like. A lot of guys mention this huge, amazing stage presence, and I got none of that. I wonder how much growing up with his obnoxious TV presence affects things like that, though.

That restores my faith in American taste - he was following the Bob Hope model, then, being the "everyone likes this guy, right?" choice of stolid executive culture.

>>84694018
Noah was pushed for by Stewart for the traditional power broker reason that you don't want the guy who follows you to be anywhere near as good as you. See also Alex Ferguson's choice of successor as manager of Man Utd.

Not really relevant, Leno is the milquetoast pick, Trump is the Letterman-tier groundbreaker. Every week he does something that puts everyone in their place - except for the ordinary American people. He is as big a populist revolution for conservatives as Obama was for liberals, and as in his case, many can't handle it. I say this as someone who admires Obama and Trump equally. When you're on the real left, rather than the approved neoliberal official opposition "left", the difference between them is one of degree. America will never accept socialism, so it may as well get the protectionist measures it needs from Trump.
>>
>>84694414
How did he not? You didn't notice that he never stopped looking shifty and uncomfortable in front of the camera despite having been in the spotlight for decades? You didn't notice that his jokes are Nixon-tier, and would have been delivered better by Nixon? You didn't notice that he has a voice like a fly trapped in a lampshade, begging your ears to tune it out?
>>
>>84694664
This is it. The other day I was watching some old Carsons, and he would have people on who weren't promoting anything, just for their conversation. Sometimes they even had new work they could have plugged, but they never got around to it - the promotional strategy was a lot more viral, keeping them in the public mind so that they were engaged before any hard sell happened, and it would never be done in the middle of a conversation the way it is now.

Even in the early nineties, the single-minded plugging of recent practice would have been regarded as a bad move, liable to turn the audience off. Now, the only conversations you hear on late night are scripted to the nth degree with wacky parlor game segments derived from Japanese TV in a bid to remind people on Twitter that broadcast television exists. When you look at Corden's show you realize how much sheer crap Ferguson was keeping out of his show in the last years by force of will, and you admire him all the more. The last great late night host, and of course, he doesn't do it anymore - he's gone to satellite radio where he can have conversations. Late night is kill.
>>
>>84694947
HAHAHA why do you think we don't stay in the containment board, and you can't have a conversation on 4chan about any kind of culture without us appearing and outnumbering you ten-to-one?

And Dave has never been good since he left that slot. Which may be another reason that Ferguson didn't try to compete anywhere else - he knows he's a late late guy.

So... OJ Simpson...

*audience goes wild*
>>
>>84693288
leno still did standup during the tonight show years. he often did unannounced gigs at smaller/hole-in-the-wall places so that way people ended up seeing him for dirt cheap, and i'd guess that he felt like he was still "keeping it real" doing comedy in smaller places as opposed to big expensive places, like it gave him "stand up cred" or something.

so that aspect of jay = i'll always give him that. his stand up might not necessarily be for me [post-tonight-show anyways] but at least he did what he loved and (at least) convinced the public he wasn't 100% out for money after he got a bunch of it, cuz lord knows his standup stuff once he was doing the tonight show wasn't for the money.
>>
>>84696246
Norm is a dilatory pill-head and gambling addict who likes to tell strings of deliberately bad jokes to see how far he can push the audience before winning them back, personally and artistically he's not someone you can build a network late night show around. I mean, he wanted to be on the early morning mainly because he probably wouldn't reliably be in shape to record a daily show until like 2am, his look changes alarmingly and he appears to have drug-induced aphasia. No way.
>>
>>84697167
It's a far more common practice to think that sucking up to and imitating the rich guy will bring you his success. Jay Leno is an incredibly vanilla guy, like a deformed Bob Hope.
>>
>>84697478
All of late night improved when the writers' strike happened. Conan's writers' strike shows are the best things he ever did in the medium. The writers' strike began the demise of hack TV, hilariously.
>>
>>84696025
>Pre election Seth

Nah.
>>
>>84699049
American stand-ups will admire and overpraise anyone who gets paid well and never hurt them personally. The nature of the country means that the aspiration of all American comedians is to be a well-paid hack. Norm's memoir basically supports the idea that his entire life was an irrelevant build-up or come-down from SNL, a show which, as the anniversary special showed, has produced less than an hour of passably funny material in its 40-year history. His genius live and on any show where he gets to do his own thing is irrelevant because he never "made it big", which in America usually means "ceasing to be a stand-up". You go to prestige cable, do movies or host - stand-up itself is not respected. Norm knew he could only sell his book by pandering to the asinine audience for Lorne Michaels mythology, so went for it.

Not talking about legion shit, talking about demographics. The people here are conservative. If you come here to say a liberal thing, it's assumed that you're b8ing.

What nonsense? You mean 4chan itself? 4chan is conservative. It's not some swarm of butthurt kids, it's just that you are walking into a conservative forum and saying liberal stuff, we don't even need to get mad to drown you out. You're the ones who have a fucking discord to coordinate "raids", we're just the people who post on 4chan. We're the norm, you're the exception.

I said "record" right there in the fucking post. Norm wanted a breakfast slot, and the point is that the turnaround on late night episodes means that that would allow him to record in the dead of night.
>>
>>84701284
This. Norm's favorite comedians are Bob Hope and Bill Cosby.
