I watched this recently for the first time on a whim, not a recommendation. I thought it was really good. Not like mind-blowing, but much better than most period pieces since.

Same, I was looking forward to it. Not really the best crime movie ever but I also thought it was very good. That whole basement scene really got me jumping, but on the other hand the murder scenes lacked that essential sense of dread and disgust that really sticks with you. Maybe the stabbing scene had it I guess, and the woman on the road as well. But I still enjoyed the movie overall
