Mulholland Drive is a mess and suffers the most from what Lynch fans think is genius, he loosely connects a bunch of things and has an overall idea of what to do, but he fills the rest of it with nonsensical bullshit which his fans proceed to overanalyze. (Inland Empire is the biggest offender of this)

I think his stuff is great when it works or when he's being succinct but when he has long scenes that seemingly just seem to have been created on some evasive whim, it detracts from the experience as a whole. It doesn't help his snobbish fans who think lynch is obscure (simply because it's on the edge of mainstream cinema) don't seem to realize this fact, assuming it's all part of some grand master plan.

I see where you are coming from. Those long scenes though don't seem long if you are invested in what he is doing, if what you have seen so far has hooked you. If he's inspired/creating from dream imagery it makes sense for his work to resonate really strongly only with certain people. I think people who unequivocally love everything he's done are probably pretentious pretenders, but from personal experience I can attest to some of his work hitting me on levels I can't even really explain and am a little embarrassed by except when I can discuss it anonymously on the internet. He's consistently hit or miss, but the hits are pretty fucking great. Just shrug the misses off as not your particular dreamscape transcendental mediation cup of tea.
