I like how in this movie they don't show the Japanese until like 2 hours into the movie. You really start to hate this anonymous force that taking out the Americans. Then you meet them and they're just like the American soldiers; afraid of imminent death, forced into a campaign that they have no real stake in, and wishing to be literally anywhere else. I don't even think it's shown in words either, you just see these desperate Japs on the hill, just like we've seen desperate Americans on the hill.

But thats what iwo jima was like. Other islands in the pacific campaign barely had any nips on them and they were just holed up in their tunnels or bunkers taking potshots. Iwo Jima was a fucking bloodbath. It made D-day look like the sunday school.
