From what I can tell, the urban areas are filled with greaseball dirty white people and immigrants and the suburbs and rural areas are comfy and rich.

new yorker here, new jersey really is a shithole. newark sucks ass (and has ghettoes), the shore is filled with guidos, and everything in between is white trash. there are a couple of very nice suburbs in the northeast corner of the state but they're dragged down by the dump that is the rest of nj. overall nj is a 3, maybe a 4/10 on a good day.

New Jersey is such a shithole that Chris Christie is in charge of it.

It's a dump outside of a few really wealthy parts, shore towns specifically. Atlantic City is literally hell. Full of bums and people that smell like cat piss asking for spare change so they can get one more chance at the casinos. The boardwalk is lined with what look like crackhouses and this is supposed to be one of the highlights of being there. You've got Camden in South Jersey which is the closest the US gets to 3rd world. They have worse crime than Detroit there. Up north there's Newark which outside of the airport is best avoided. It's the car jacking capital of the US. There might be some okay suburban areas between these areas. I still sort of like it though.
