Thanos took him as a slave/prisoner and that would've been the end for him, except he was a clever ruseman, and convinced Thanos to let him lead a battle on Earth... Which he then lost on purpose so that he could be taken as a prisoner to Asgard, where Thanos likely would not try to retrieve him. Then, shit went down and he got to be king of Asgard.
