Will there be ever anything like it again?

Second best show of all time after Sopranos.
>>
>only 2 seasons

I want to get into it but eh..
>>
>>84572236
The story it sets out to tell is told pretty well with what time they were given.

But the series really shines in the kind of vibe it manages to produce. You really feel like you get a glimpse into the daily live of Romans from a variety of social classes.
>>

first season yes, second season is extremely obviously rushed and really should have been split in at least 2 seasons, preferably 3

It was meant to be longer but budget problems cut the series short so they sort of crammed the rest of the series into the second season. A shame. The first season is the best series i know
>>
>>84572856
IIRC HBO has come out and said they regret the decision

shame really, just telling the story of how Octavian became Augustus would have been more than sufficient to fill 3 seasons, and the series had to mind Vorenus and Pullo as well

I say this unironically, but Vorenus and Pullo's friendship is easily the most believable and best friendship in television and one of the best in film as a whole

too costly

actually that's part of the problem: a great deal of the battles would most decidedly NOT be mindless because we have the full historic records (if you can sift through the propaganda bullshit) of those battles and they were (at least the important ones) commanded by highly intelligent and capable people

I really would not have minded seeing say, Pharsalus fully in action
>>
>>84573335
fuck off nerd im glad they didnt waste money on battle scenes considering it allowed them to make the best set, props, and costumes ever. Just look at the lorica hamata my nigga, its fucking perfect. People complain that they were too dirty but come on, we're talking about the gallic legions. A little dirt and grime to show that theyd been through some shit was a nice touch.
>>
>>84573335
>>84573487
they did as well as they could with the budget they had - a budget that effectively killed the series btw

besides i really like that little scene where Pompey is explaining to Vorenus what happened at Pharsalus - and Vorenus agreeing it was a sound strategy and it should've worked - it gave it a human touch
>>
I just re-watched this last week .. you know its interesting, each episode felt like 3 or 4 episodes of a modern series. They all had so much depth with intricate well crafted stories... never see that any more, sad
>>
>>84573335
Would be doable today for HBO, back then large scale cgi battles were not really possible with the budgetary constraints tv series have compared to movies. Unless they want it to look like absolute shit.
>>
>>84573655
oh yeh that was a very good scene, good enough that I wonder why they even bothered with the generic actiony sequence in place of the actual battle

she realized he was a strong man and that her husband was too weak for the world and so she resigned herself to be his wife because she realized he would provide security and a future.
It backfired but it shows the kind of thought process a woman had back then, far less interested in romance and far more interested in financial security.
This is expanded upon during the Vorenus family dinner when they talk about how they didnt love each other at first and she obviously married him in similar circumstances to Pullo and Irene.
>>
>>84575654

Here's the thing: Atia was a cunt, but she knew what she was and embraced it. Didn't try to hide it.

Servilia, on the other hand, was a hypocritical, self-righteous bitch - masquerading as a good person. And her constant woe-is-me attitude was sickening. I couldn't stand her. Just my opinion.

This. Throughout the empire they actually got less degenerate as time went on. The high point of the Antonines gave way to the military dictatorship of the severans, and after the chaos of the third century, Diocletian's reformed empire was pretty much a state whose sole purpose was to prop up the army. After Rome became Christian most of the remnants of the old Roman decadence were gone, but by that point the empire was collapsing.

Degeneracy and military rule aren't opposed to one another. Many patricians from Republican times likely had a military background as that was the requirement to hold certain offices, which didn't negate them from being degenerate.

True but the massively increasing budget for the army and ridiculous militarisation of Roman society will have led to a situation where the aristocracy in the provinces will have been one with military connections, close to the frontiers and spending most of their time at war, and the land-owning nobility in Italy became ever more irrelevant. It was really the decline of urbanisation throughout the 3rd and 4th centuries that will have curbed degeneracy the most though.

>Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to HBO Rome, whom, as much as I admire them, I do quibble with. Rome had a very archaic philosophy: that if the consul was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. HBO can say that Octavian became emperor and reigned for many years, and he was wise and good. But Rome doesn’t ask the question: What was Octavian's tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these gauls? By the end of the war, Vercingetorix is gone but all of the gauls aren’t gone – they’re in Gaul. Did Octavian pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby gauls, in their little gaul cradles?

>>
>>84577706
Pretty well I'd reckon. Octavian knows how to delegate, understands that the common people want stability and security, and that his armies are motivated somewhat by loyalty and prestige, but mostly by the promise of pay, either as a salarum or plunder. Octavian's also flexible enough to negotiate if necessary. I could see him signing a separate peace with Dorne and Highgarden, and maybe the Lannisters too although any peace or alliance between those two would be just a temporary truce. The Iron Islands would be systematically wiped out, or maybe incorporated into his navy, the North depending on whether the Starks or the Boltons are in power, could also come to terms. Harrenhall and the Riverlands are too valuable for trade and agriculture I think that's the one area Octavian would fight tooth and nail for, no negotiations.

Octavian is also willing to make peace with someone temporarily and defer a problem so he is able to deal with a different threat.

Everyone in GOT seems to want to fight every single one of their enemies all at once and then gets taken from multiple sides.

He'd rek everyone.

A Roman legion alone would fuck every military force, including dragons. They didn't fuck about. Look at the siege of Masada, probably one of the most impenetrable fortresses in human history, on top of a 400ft high plateau, in the middle of the desert, the Romans built a 5km wall around it in three days to prevent escape, a 400ft earth ramp in two months and then pushed one of the largest armoured siege towers ever constructed up said ramp before storming the fortress, all with nothing but legionary muscle and a few donkeys.
>>
>>84577706
Even with the difference in technology (TV GoT doesn't even have plate armor the Romans couldn't replicate if they wanted to) and mythological aid, Augustus would still fuck them all up in record time.

He'd marry the dragon queen woman after defeating her armies for political reasons and be introducing her to the joys of rough sex before the end of a month.
>>

I'd love this, provided they had Pullo/Vorenus characters and not just nobility.

I think he said that in the vein of how Napoleon said "You can not lead a battle if you think you look silly on a horse."

They're playing for keeps and to stop and think "this is absurd" is useless thinking. Caesar knows he's not actually playing god, but he knows how the people of Rome will see him as. Napoleon has to feel like an emperor while riding horseback because every soldier saw him as a modern day Roman emperor.

The Silmarillon would be awful to see adapted. Too many characters in too many stories spanning over several centuries, which inevitably means they'd go for a garbage & cheap adaptation. Like trying to adapt all the Greek mythology into a TV show.

Well, this could go ugly in both ways imo:
- Either they try to stick to the original stories and that makes you an incredibly slow-paced show which will get cancelled rather quickly
- Or (more likely) they'll adapt and condense the stories into an unbroken series of wars adventures between the Eldar, the Men, and Morgoth. This will probably see some multiples "original" characters or some heavy re-characterization of the existing ones. Possibly the addition of sex and nudity scenes, which would have made ol' Tolkien shower them with a hose if he hadn't gone to Eru.
They'll certainly try to adapt it, and yes, they will most certainly displease the book fans (either a boring and quickly cancelled adaptation, or something for which the only possible form of mercy would be a 12 gauge shot to the back of the head)
>>
>>84585059
Yes, I agree, most stand-alone stories could be amazing by their own rights if you adapt them well.
The story of the War of the Last Alliance (the final battle of which is the prologue of LOTR) would also be very adaptable imo.
>>
>>84578128
Sure, but in current GoT he's always at risk of some random character (probably female) coming up and stabbing him for no reason, then giving an ice-cold one liner while he bleeds out and then it cuts to the next scene and he's never addressed again.

All those Silmarillion storylines need a lot of explaining to the audience for them to make sense though, much more than lotr did since it is a rather simple set up. And even then Fellowship had a 10 minutes long exposition thingy in the beginning. I do wish to see a film about Hurin or some stuff from the unfinished tales like Tuor's journey to Gondolin. Maybe some day but i don't have much hope fora good adaptation

Real Augustus divorced twice.
>>
>>84587707
true, but his first marriage was unconsummated and by all accounts Scribonia was a nagging bitch

on the other hand his marriage to Livia was considered the model for a Roman marriage and she acted as an advisor to him and was given almost unprecedented honors and authority.

Not to mention that all 3 of his marriages were to proper Roman women of good pedigree and the fact that Mark Anthony's business with Cleopatra was one of his most powerful propaganda tools.
So he would have never married a foreign woman, most certainly not a ruler.
>>
>>84588035
I think he would have enough sense of Realpolitik to divorce and remarry whoever could bring the greatest amount of stability to the empire, and then spin the propaganda to fit the best possible narrative. And remember, in this narrative he is in Westeros, not Rome. The citizens of southern Westeros seem to have less problems with foreigners than Romans. Yes, but he only needs the charade for the Romans themselves. He could spin the tale on the Roman side (of whatever wonky portal we have in this scenario, implying it's not a one way trip) of him being the Principes in Rome, but since Romans are inherently superior, he can still be God-Caeser of them dirty barbarians on the westerosi side.

>Morgan Freeman narrates as Eru
Fuck this. Sir Ian McKellan narrates it as if he's Gandalf telling the story to Hobbits.

The only way this works is if they stick to the major stories. They could do it as a miniseries focusing on the war against melkor and the cool shit like beren/luthien etc.

Deadwood is trash. HBO realized that saying fuck and cock sucker every other word for 3 seasons while nothing happened every episode wasn't worth keeping on the air. Good riddance.

Let's face the facts about me and you,
A love unspecified.
Though I'm proud to call you "Romaboo!"
The crowd will always talk and stare.

I feel exactly those feelings, too
And that's why I keep them inside.
'Cause this boo can't bear the world's disdain,
And sometimes it's easier to hide,
Than explain our
Rome love,
That's all it is,
Rome love,
He's mine I'm his,
There's nothing gay about it in our eyes.

You ask me 'bout this thing we share,
And he tenderly replies
It's Rome love
Between two guys

We're closer than the average man and wife
That's why our matching posts say, "AVE, TRVE TO CAESAR"
You know I'll stick by you, for the rest of my life.
You're the only man who's even been inside of me!
(whoah, he just gets me that's all)
There's no need to clarify (oh no?)
Just let it grow more and more each day
It's like I married my favorite era
but in a totally biased way

Lets go!
It's Rome love
Don't compromise
The feelings of some barbar shits
Throwing up your Pila
Into the sky
I'll be there to care through all shitposts
I'll be there to share the memes
It's Rome love
Between two boos
And when I say, "amor vincit omnia"
It's not what it implies

It's Rome love
between
two
boos

Marcus Antonius was the definition of a chad, but he was actually a fighting general that inspired his men, if Julius Caesar did not find that to be a useful tool he never would have seen the light of day. Marc Antony knew that his entire existence was because of the latter's fondness for him.

Whether or not he actually loved Julius, his life would have been forfeit without him. So it makes sense that he would have used his death as a rallying cry for the troops that were loyal. Shakespear kind of fuck up a lot of modern interpretations of history, Romans were less compassionate than the ebil nazi's

Vorenus
Posca
Antony
First season Octavian
Caesar

Cant decide who I like the most
>>

But that could be attributed to circumstances, once Caesar was dead if he hadn't acted the way that he did he would have certainly been assassinated by the ruling class.

not really simce the US openly rebelled and made something different whereas the "byzantines" literally had blood lineage and considered themselves romans and were only ever differentiated from the western and earlier romans by others.

The Roman empire fought dozens of civil wars, that's how the western and eastern roman empire became a thing, the Byzantines were what was left when the western roman empire fell (the sacking of Rome)
