Nah, the problem is that they don't know when to stop the shows. They're so concerned about prolonging it, that they reach and pass the point where it starts dropping in quality and it drags the opinion of the whole show down as a result.

If most of these shows aimed for 3-4 seasons, they'd be MUCH better

Yes. 1 is best but I enjoyed at least the first few seasons. Later on it got a little tedious, and I never watched the final season, but I really enjoyed the show in the beginning. It's just goofy and David Duchovney is charming as hell and fun to watch, and despite what gay OP said the shows is overall pretty funny and keeps you interested.
