Is it worth watching the Babylon 5 franchise? That's a 5-season commitment of 22 episodes each, along with 7 films and 13 episodes of the spinoff series "Crusade."
>>
>>84566635

Very. Yes.
>>
>>84566635
Worth every single minute.
>>
>>84566635
Fuck no. Awful boring series. DS9 is better.
>>
After the first big story is concluded and the immortals fucked off you can stop watching.
>>

DS9 has better production values, that's all
>>
>>84566797
and better acting and direction

Season 1 is absolutely painful to get through the first time.

After that, with the exclusion of half of season 5, it is unadulterated kino
>>
>>84566635
worth it, no clue about the films and the spinoff, and the last season can be skipped in kind of pisses me off that it exists.

Of course; but warning, primitive CGI ahead, rough 1st season, rough 5th ( suddenly uncancelled) season.

In The Beginning and Thirdspace are the best of the movies. The others can be watched but aren't super good. The spinoff, Crusade, had potential but never seemed to get it realized despite having a cast that could have done amazing things with it.

Babylon 5 with modernized CG and rescanned film reels is my dream.
>>
>>84567931
I read somewhere it would cost millions and not enough to justify the sales.

DS9 and Voyager are in the same boat.
>>
>>84567931
no need for new CG, just a nice HD film will be nice.
>>
>>84567996
Sadly will never happen.

Something to do with original transfers or the original way it was filmed.
>>
>>84568032
that sucks, and i belied in the meme about old cameras filming in HD no problem.
>>
>>84568073
Probably wrong but I think it was early digital or some shit.
>>
>>84568073

If it was filmed on good old 35mm film, an HD release is easily possible.

But it came out at a weird time, so it might be some Frankenstein digital monstrosity.
>>
MEEEEESSSTTTAAAHH MMMOOOORRRDDEEENN
>>
>>84566635
That depends, "what do you want"?
>>
>>84568032
>>84568106
Yeah, there was cutbacks because Doug Netter went behind JMS' back and lied that it can't be done, just to save just a few bucks. Imagine that, a few fucking bucks that cheap bastard. After that every CGI shot or a shot that includes CGI (like in the garden area, gun battles where there are PPG flashes etc.) were done in ratio 4:3 even though it would have been easily done in widescreen, which was the way the show was actually filmed. That is why you can sometimes see the quality drastically change between edits in the DVD release because all the shots containing effects were actually cropped to widescreen format.

What do you want?

Also, GOAT soundtrack - on par with McCreary's BSG stuff.

A fantastic series (the first 4.5 seasons, anyway), but it does have a lot of... less important episodes. If you liked the campier parts of Trek you won't have a problem, but otherwise you can skip a lot of season 1 (pic related)
>>
>>84569587
Some of the campy shit sets up important things though. Like the soul stealer episode.
>>
>>84569587
>all those episodes with relevant character and plot details marked "non-essential"
This is not a show for skipfags.
>>
>>84566635
I just watched the entire thing recently, generally yes, though really does lose steam in the 5th season.
>>
>>84569685
>S5
Yeah. They weren't sure they would get a fifth season so they pushed all the PsiWar stuff to the background and wrapped up the civil war stuff "early," thereby making S5 a lot more compartmentalized than the rest.
>>
>>84569742
Imagine if we got to see the original vision, with the Shadow War taking all of season 4, and then the psychic stuff tying in with the civil war and the eventual finale on Earth... damn it.
>>
>>84566635
if you are going to watch it then watch the pilot movie, The Gathering, it's not great but it's the start, then season 1-5.

Thirdspace is basically a double length episode that slots in somewhere during seaons 3-4 can't quite remember, it's alright.

In The Beginning is decent but full of flashback spoilers and a few continuity errors so only watch that after you've done the main series.

crusade isn't really worth it, unless you're CRAVING more badly, but I've watch B5 3-4 times through and never finished crusade.

and then there's the show that must not be named, just don't do it.
>>
>>84569587

IMO, I would call bab5 a "slow burner". It starts off slow, then gets better.
With that being said I never got around to season 5 but from what I watched I liked. Also Like Trek it has it's bad/shitty episodes, but what show hasn't.
There are 1080p "remasters" floating around the web. They are not amazing looking, but from what I saw looked better than the DVD's.
>>
>>84569587

Does anyone here unironically skip episodes of series on their first watch?
>>
don't skip any episodes unless you 're an impatient child or have ADHD or something, there's a lot of world building.

season 1 isn't as good as 2 onwards yes, but it doesn't have nearly as many painfully dull episodes as the first two seasons of TNG, or first of DS9, if you've watched either of those then you'll be fine.

those episodes are not just awful, but dont really add anything to do the overall plot so they can be safely skipped, i deffinately wouldnt skip any other episodes (even in season 1) because they are mostly all important later on

The absolute worst episode that I could remember was Ivanova's episode about her religion or her mother or one of her parents dying or something.

i think ivanova pulled off the whole female badass act better than kira

but damn is nana a megamilf
>>

did you miss the point of that scene?

not everyone saw a minbari, every race that looked on witnessed a prophet figure of their own belief system, the vorlon had ingrained an image of themselves into all of them through history so they would respond positively and be allies, sneaky fuckers. you would see a squid monster if you were a squid monster race
>>
>>84571643

i remember absolutely hating some episodes in season 1 like the soulstealer guy and the boxing episode and i would say the show greatly improved from season 2 onwards, much like star trek tng
>>
>>84566635

If nothing else, you get to experience the joy of a well-produced, well-written and well-executed show. None of this newage shit with surviving 'season to season' and making only one-season arcs.

Story was preplanned for the lenght of seasons, with all characters, main and secondary, having lore trap-doors to get them out if it came to it. And they actually used it for one character.

Top tier foreshadowing, everything has an internal logic and you get shit in s5 foreshadowed in s2 and everything makes sense regresionally.

Really. If you don't mind the 'old sci fi vibe', it's glorious.
>>
>>84566635

For me, the episode that convinced me to buy the boxset and stop streaming was In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum. Once Morden was on the screen in Sheridans office, then his smirking during the interrogation sessions.

Perfect acting. Just two guys in a room in most scenes but more intense than half the battles in the show.

Also Sheridan being captured and tortured was a great episode. I love the music at the beginning, gave me an X-Files vibe.
>>
>>84566635

I'm in the middle of rewatching it at this moment. God yes it is worth it. The only thing DS9 has on B5 is that DS9's has visually aged better.
>>
>>84570178
I wouldn't normally recommend it, and especially in the case of Babylon 5 it's almost heresy given how part of what makes the show work so well is how long term and relevant everything is over time..

But season 1 really is that bad. And the show really is so good that it's worth watching. So in my case if people can't do it - and after seeing so much stargate, star trek etc it's understandable for Soul Hunter to not win you over - I think skipping is okay. Portions of S1 anyway.
>>
>>84571837
The one that convinced me the boxset was when Londo was the episode when the urchin aliens destroyed Gkar's planet and Gkar was still all friendly on Londo. And during the end when Gkar was forced to ask for political asylum with his speech. fuck that is pure fucking tv kino there
>>
>>84571837

the sheridan being tortured arc is easily my favorite part in the entire show, the writing is excellent
>>
>>84566635
The production value always kept me away from this show when it was debuting.
>>
>>84571812
In The Beginning is actually good though

And Thirdspace, isn't great, but it's fun schlock once you've completed the series. Definitely watchable.

Rest of the movies are absolute trash though.
>>
>>84571837
>>84571889
I never really liked Sheridan. I really loved Sinclair's character and Sheridan's love story arc with Delenn makes me cringe even back then
>>
>>84571899

the pilot movie does a pretty great job of setting everything up

but yeah i would skip every other movie and crusaders and just watch in the beginning after you finish season 4
>>
>>84571919

i dont think its any coincidence that the show vastly improved from season 2 onwards with sheridan becoming the new main character due to michael o’bare's crippling mental illness

JMS did a fantastic sending off for sinclair though with the big reveal he has eventually

One thing I hate is how the Drakh/Centauri plotline isn't exactly expanded upon.. Well, it's weird. Because you see the ultimate ending earlier on, without even knowing it's the ending.

But in the practice of watching, I find the second of half of season 5 finally starts to get going, only for it to just end without 'resolving' that plotline.. well, it's already been resolved.

I dunno, I think season 5 would have been a lot better if they could focus it more on the drakh/centauri/remnants of the shadows. The psychic arc goes on waaaaaayyy too long and is soooooo boring, if they cut that down to 3 episodes and improved the Drakh storyline it would have been perfect. I understand they were limited with time and everything got fucked because of the cancel/uncancel though.

Still a fantastic series.
>>
AHHHH YES, MISTER GARIBALDI
>>
After recently rewatching the show, the first season wasn't as bad as I remembered it. After the first 10 or so episodes, it really started to pick up in quality, and even then the first 10 did start to plant the seeds of the major plots to come. And then though the show does have a pretty decent amount of filler, a lot of the filler is rather good.
>>
>>84572333
I had the same experience. The first time I watched B5, I was only doing it to appease my dad. I found season 1 unbearably bad but I was watching it with him, and it meant a lot to him so I didn't want to say "this sucks" and leave. But I came really, really, really close.

The second time I watched it, I actually enjoyed it, though there's still some very unbearable episodes.

I think it's because you realize that a lot of the 'real' story is the stuff going on in background. Details that seemed superfluous are now prophetic. It was truly brilliant.

Plus you care more about the world and characters so it's not as bad seeing them go through Story of The Weeks in season 1. Where the first time you watch the show you got O'Hare's cheesy acting.. love the poor guy but he does not make an initial great impression. Reminds me of Harrison Ford reading the Blade Runner narration.
>>
>>84571526
and ivanova's sex scene

That scene was worth it purely for Dr Franklins line "Why don't you just put a bag over his head and 'Do it for B5'" line which was fucking hilarious

Doctor Franklin probably had the weakest arc out of all the main cast. He was just kind of there during the first season and then his arc hit during the second and third and it was all about the stims, then in the fourth season he was just a utility for other people. Kind of a shame.

Never saw crusades, as the main appeal of b5 is it's a fully realized, planned storyline unfolding to his complete conclusion, and crusades was aborted before it could go anywhere and not something jms cared much about anyway. I don't think you need to see all the films either, only a couple are necessary to the overall story iirc, the one with Martin sheen is just a shitty overextended alien of the week episode.

Don't watch the gathering before the pilot; it spoils a huge number of plot points (Delenn's role in startinging the Earth/Minbarri War, Sheridan's introduction, plus the flash forward in S3 with Londo becoming Emperor and him doing his best to circumvent the Shadow created mind control parasite the underlings of the Shadow forced onto him to control him/Centuries Prime getting nuked from orbit)

Both series are very similar with kind of weak first seasons but become better later on.

Also while DS9's overall storyline was strong. B5's storyline was elder god tier. The only true downside to B5 is the really dated cgi.
