Critics never looked beyond the movie poster. And everyone else shat on the movie because the real-life Chris Kyle was a gigantic douchebag who lied about a bunch of shit. If the movie was about a fictional character with the exact same story, responses probably would have been way different.

It was obvious from the very first trailer that the movie was not a propaganda film. I don't understand how any one could consider a soldier deliberating on whether or not to kill a civilian in a moment of panic-stricken moral ambiguity to be "glorifying" the Iraq War.

But I also don't think the movie was about Chris' need to succeed or to be a "hero". It was more about how he absolutely had to finish what he started, which is basically spelled out in the first scene where he's a kid and his dad asks "did you finish it?" when he hears about the fight with the bully. Chris can't stop fighting until he "finishes" his rivalry by killing that enemy sniper who's been fucking with him the entire movie. And he refusal to quit takes its toll on his home life and his mental health, which the movie went through great lengths to show.
