Lovely Sunday isn't it?
>>84534166
Any particular reason why? Do you like John Landis' sense of comedy?
>>84534514
Not really, i hated "Animal House" but "An American Werewolf in London" seemed interesting to me.
I shit on Synt.
>>84534651
That's cool. AWiL is definitely different enough from Animal House to warrant a watch and feels much more like Landis finally getting to make something purely for himself rather than being hired to be an SNL/ZAZ stooge.
This film has a weird sort of mystique for me, one I am sure many of you are familiar with if not for this film then for others like it, which is to say, films with cult status and intriguing VHS boxes that sat low on the shelf at the video store. Never got to rent this as a kid, so its mystique is entirely nostalgic, and I'm unfortunately unable to go into this assuming it was real. That suspension of disbelief would have been gut-churning, disturbing, and amazing, the sort of transgressive experience i find myself gravitating toward despite my intellectual reservations.

Your first mistake was existing, /lbg/. Your second mistake was thinking you know more than me. I'm here to correct both of those mistakes. No matter how much time it takes, from now until the end of time, I'll be here to prove you wrong and destroy you. Give up, /lbg/, you can't win. I will always outmatch you physically, mentally, genetically and sexually. I never tire, I choose to sleep. I never hunger, I choose to eat. I can prove anything. I choose not to. Now get off my board and go back to plebbit. This is your warning.

Why is that absurd? Culture changes. Emojis are really just an evolution of the written word, or an evolution of memetic language. Plastering a picture of a Smiley Face on a tombstone is no different to an image of an angel or a cross in effect.

No way dude, you wouldn't put emojis or emoticons into formal written requests or notices now would you? Just because we are increasingly using images and such for communication that doesn't mean they should be used in every context or registry, just like slang terms for instance.

I have reviews with my thoughts for the other films I watched.
>>84534514
I watched Timeless Bottomless Bad Movie recently and I thought it was pretty good. I checked it out because it was in your favorites. I think your description of it in the last thread I was in is very accurate. I think Gummo executed some of the same elements a bit better, but I think that's due to my preference of American subcultures over Korean ones. But Bad Movie was still a great film.

Jean Cocteau
people say Maya Deren is surrealism but she isn't really
>>84559969
It's not that loose if you actually go by the definition given in the surrealist manifesto. Cronenberg and Weerasethakul are magical realism at most and Deren herself rejected surrealism.

I'm glad you got to read it, was worried it was too late. And I'm also glad you liked the film, I need to check out O-Bi, O-Ba myself, may even try to watch it today if I can. The premise reads somewhat vaguely like Dead Man's Letters if you've seen that, any similarity?
Should I get rid of my ratings and do likes/not-likes instead?
>>84564566
no ratings and no favs, just like/dislike is patrish

You should've gassed yourself.

Yeah, I imagine we're in different time zones so it makes it a bit tough to communicate in the threads. I obviously highly suggest O-bi O-ba since it's in my favorites. If the premise interests you, you'll probably like it. I haven't seen Dead Man's Letters yet, but O-bi O-ba deals primarily with the conceptions of belief and spirituality and their purposes. And obviously some anti-communist sentiments (since belief itself is against communist doctrine).
Mars Needs Moms is the greatest movie ever made.

Are all Tarantino films as melodramatic and sentimental as Letters from Iwo Jima? I loved it as a kid, along with several others he made, but by God is it absolute trash. I hope Unforgiven will at least be half-way decent when I watch it again.

Why don't you believe in a film canon lbg?
can someone give me a quick rundown on what letterboxd is? Is it good motivation to watch movies?
I find it hard to watch movies because there's no one to talk about them with
>>84576980
>appreciating art only through social interactions
>not appreciating the intrinsic value of said art
I bet you also watch anime, and play video games while saying their the highest form of art, you fucking faggot
never mind I stopped being lazy. can someone just tell me is it worthwhile giving movies star ratings? like do they give suggestions based on your data?
>>84577193
no I haven't had the motivation to do either those since first half of high school.
I probably watch 3 films a week it'd just be nice to watch at least 1 a day because I can't think of anything more worthwhile doing, apart from reading
>>84576980
I think rather than the 'social' side of it (which by and large sucks, both on the site itself and in these threads) the real value of Letterboxd is discovery, it's easy to find out about and get interested in a bunch of films you wouldn't have otherwise
>>84577233
there are no reccs or anything to be gained by rating movies with stars, only reason to use them really is give them context with an essay review otherwise no one will give a fuck (and no one will read your shit anyway)
just keep logging and posting here so people can give you reccs, and follow interesting people then watch what they watch
ezpz
>>84577233
There's no purpose. Don't rate films, only log and like whatever you think is great, and not just okay. The idea that art can in any meaningful way be summed up by a number or "rating" is a STEMlord fantasy universally mocked by academics and other cultured people.
Watch lots of Bergman, critics like Jonathen Rosenbaum, who have very nice horizons, would be great to read as it'll expose you to all sorts of directors you otherwise wouldn't have known of unless you were previously initiated in cinema.
if you want a site with good recs use criticker

spent 15 minutes clicking favourite and don't get the point. How are you meant to recommend me movies based on my favourite movies, when most people probably favourite the same shit? I feel like this could only work if I purposely only try think up obscure films that aren't in the most popular list.
Also everyone's saying the website sucks
>>84577295
>follow interesting people
so the idea is basically when I find a less well-known movie I like I should go on letterbox, see who gave it a good review and see what other films they like? That really doesn't sound effective for finding new movies
